Pablito
Died: November 22, 2022
Pablo Milanés was born in the city of Bayamo, Cuba. He studied music at the municipal conservatory of La Habana.
In his beginnings he was very influenced by traditional Cuban music and by feeling. Feeling is a musical style that began in Cuba in the forties and represented a new way of approaching the song, where sentiment defined the interpretation and was influenced by American currents of romantic song and jazz. Feeling was accompanied by a guitar, in the style of the old troubadours but enriched by jazzy harmonizations. Thus this new form of communication or "feeling" with the public was established.
As a performer, Pablo Milanés later joined the quartet Los Bucaneros, with whom he collaborated on his early works. He also tried his luck as an occasional soloist, diversifying in this way his experiences that would later lead him to work solo.
In 1965 Pablo Milanés composed the song Mis 22 años, considered by many the link between feeling and Nueva Trova Cubana, including new musical and vocal elements that would be precursors of the Cuban music that would come later. The collaboration with Los Bucaneros extends until 1966.
In 1967 he joined mandatory military service. It was the time of the Vietnam War and Pablo Milanés began to take sides with social causes, emerging in his works a concern for what surrounded him. In 1968, Milanés offers his first concert with Silvio Rodríguez at the Casa de las Américas. This would be the first preview of what later, in 1972, would emerge as the popular musical movement of Nueva Trova. In that same place he would meet members of the cultural and musical elite of other American countries with whom he shared his social concerns. Violeta Parra, Mercedes Sosa, Daniel Viglietti, Chico Buarque, Simone, Vinícius de Moraes, Milton Nascimento, Víctor Jara among many others, passed through the Casa de las Américas in that era.
As a composer, Pablo Milanés has touched various styles, including Cuban son and protest song in the late sixties. He has belonged to the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora and has composed themes for cinema. Through GESICAIC, both Pablo Milanés and other prominent Cuban musicians, including Silvio Rodríguez, participate in a creative workshop where young Cuban cinematic talents were trained by teaching them the best of Cuban music, which would later be reflected in a generation of filmmakers that fused music and cinema perfectly.
This stage of Pablo Milanés spans from the late sixties to the mid-seventies, and is full of the artist's themes: Yo no te pido, Los años mozos, Cuba va, Hoy la vi, Yolanda, No me pidas, Los caminos, Pobre del cantor, Hombre que vas creciendo, Yo pisaré las calles nuevamente, and others.
At the beginning of the eighties, Pablo formed his own group, with the collaboration of several friends who were with him at GESICAIC. This stage is characterized by the richness of musical resources used and the variety of interspersed genres, although its contents continue to have a strong social background.
An important album in Pablo Milanés' life was titled Querido Pablo, a tribute album recorded with some of his great friends, and in which people of the stature of Víctor Manuel and Ana Belén, Luis Eduardo Aute and Mercedes Sosa, among many others, participate. This album had a sequel in 2001, which was titled Pablo Querido.
Twenty years later, a good handful of artists come together again to sing to the tune of Pablo Milanés. On this occasion, in addition to "classic" friends of Pablo, artists from the new pop music join, such as Fher (the singer of the Mexican rock group Maná), Marco Antonio Muñiz or Armando Manzanero.
In 2005 he composes part of the soundtrack for the film Siempre Habana directed by Ángel Peláez. Among his many songs, the following are especially famous: Yolanda, Yo me quedo, Amo a esta isla and El breve espacio en que no estás, Para vivir and Cuánto gané, cuánto perdí
Numerous artists have collaborated with him, among which stand out: Ana Belén, Maná, Luís Represas Silvio Rodríguez, Joaquín Sabina, Caco Senante, Ismael Serrano, Joan Manuel Serrat, Los Van Van, Carlos Varela, Lilia Vera, Víctor Manuel
