Conceived over several years alongside Dagoberto González Jr., the musical director and arranger of the project, the album is a tribute to Milanés' prolific body of work, presenting his classics in a lively salsa version.
A true festival of prestigious voices in Latin music came together for this project: Alejandro Sanz, Gilberto Santa Rosa, Andy Montañez, Juanes, Diego Torres, Oscar D'León, Rosario, Ismael Miranda, Luis Enrique, La India, Francisco Céspedes, Ana Belén, El Canario, Aymée Nuviola, Gonzalo Rubalcaba, Yotuel, Caco Senante, Víctor Manuelle, and Isaac Delgado.
Milanés, recognized for his ability to navigate a variety of musical genres, from tradition to modernity, fully immerses himself in the salsa genre with Amor y salsa. The album benefits from the long musical collaboration with Dagoberto González Jr., who was part of Milanés' group for more than 25 years and produced and directed several of his albums.
Throughout the album, we encounter timeless Milanés classics such as El breve espacio en que no estás, performed with the elegance of Gilberto Santa Rosa; Para vivir, adorned with flamenco nuances and masterfully performed by Alejandro Sanz, and Yo no te pido, with the powerful delivery of La India. Also noteworthy is Oscar D'León's interpretation of Años, which stands out for his ability to improvise.
Furthermore, the album features lesser-known compositions and some unreleased songs by the Cuban musician, such as Día de luz (2014), performed by Juanes, and Desde el portal (2017), performed by Francisco Céspedes.
Recorded in multiple cities, from La Habana to Nueva York, Amor y salsa – 80 aniversario adds a new layer of richness to Milanés' vast legacy. The album consists of 18 collaborations and two songs that Milanés performed solo, totaling 20 songs.
