Within the framework of celebrations for the 190th anniversary of the founding of the Universidad Autónoma de Zacatecas "Francisco García Salinas", the session presided over by rector Rubén Ibarra Reyes and Ángel Román Gutiérrez, general secretary of the institution, determined that the artist would be decorated on September 26th.

The decision was made to grant him this title to recognize the trajectory of the artist who has stood out thanks to his musical compositions, as well as for his contributions over the years such as the creation of the Nueva Trova Cubana movement.

The nueva trova is a movement within Cuban music that emerged during the sixties, after the establishment of the Cuban Revolution and its consequent political and social changes.

Milanés is also one of the founders of the Grupo de Experimentación Sonora of the ICAIC alongside Silvio Rodríguez and Noel Nicola.

The work of Milanés, as noted in the university ruling, "is characterized by poetic and profound texts, it possesses great influence. As a creator and performer he has exploited almost all genres of Cuban popular music and Latin American music".

The Cuban singer-songwriter studied piano (1952), and upon abandoning it he would be guided by pianist and composer Candito Ruiz, and reciter and pianist Luis Carbonell.

Professionally he began his artistic career with the Cuarteto del Rey, where he was the lead voice, where he had decisive learning in his later development as an artist.

He participated in the Zacatecas Cultural Festival and at the Mella theater, he presented the album titled Flores del futuro, in the year 2016. He has composed more than 400 songs.
