Yordan Álvarez is a Cuban baseball player born on June 27, 1997, in Las Tunas, Cuba. He primarily plays as a left fielder and designated hitter. After beginning his career in Cuba with the Leñadores de Las Tunas, he left the island in search of an opportunity in Major League Baseball and later signed to play professionally in the United States.
He made his MLB debut with the Houston Astros in 2019 and made an immediate impact, earning American League Rookie of the Year honors. His power at the plate, offensive discipline, and run-producing ability quickly established him as one of the most prominent Cuban stars in contemporary baseball.
Throughout his career with the Astros, he has been a key part of the club's offense, with postseason appearances, All-Star selections, and a consistent presence among the league's top power hitters. In 2026 he stood out again after being named MLB Player of the Week, sharing that distinction with fellow Cuban Andy Pagés.
