Yordan Álvarez Named AL Player of the Month for July 2026

Cuban slugger Yordan Álvarez was named the American League Player of the Month for July 2026, Major League Baseball announced on August 3. It is the second time this season the Houston Astros' designated hitter has earned the honor, after also winning it in April, and the fourth Player of the Month award of his career.

Over the course of July, Álvarez hit .360 with 9 home runs and 22 RBIs in 23 games, adding a .467 on-base percentage and a .721 slugging percentage. Those numbers gave him the best OPS in the majors for the month at 1.188 among qualified hitters.

The Cuban-born hitter, who was born in Las Tunas in 1997, has been cited by baseball media as one of the strongest cases in this year's American League Most Valuable Player race. His production also helped the Astros take sole possession of first place in the AL West by the end of July, after having opened the month in third place in a tightly contested division.

Álvarez, who debuted in the majors in 2019 and was named AL Rookie of the Year that same season, continues to establish himself as one of the leading Cuban figures in contemporary baseball.

Yordan Álvarez is a Cuban baseball player born on June 27, 1997, in Las Tunas, Cuba. He primarily plays as a left fielder and designated hitter. After beginning his career in Cuba with the Leñadores de Las Tunas, he left the island in search of an opportunity in Major League Baseball and later signed to play professionally in the United States.
