Cuban designated hitter Yordan Álvarez of the Houston Astros made Major League Baseball history on Friday, June 12, 2026, becoming the first player in MLB history to hit a grand slam and a multi-run home run in the first inning of a game.
The feat came at Kauffman Stadium in Kansas City, in what became one of baseball's most historic single innings. The left-handed Álvarez opened the scoring with an opposite-field two-run homer early in the inning, then cleared the bases with a two-out grand slam to center field, giving him six RBIs in the Astros' nine-run first inning.
According to Sportradar, Álvarez became the eighth player in MLB history to hit a grand slam and a multi-run homer in the same inning, and the first since Kendrys Morales did it for the Los Angeles Angels against Texas in 2012. Additionally, according to ESPN Research, since the RBI became an official statistic in 1920, only Álvarez and David Ortiz (in 2008) have hit two home runs and driven in six runs in a first inning.
The 28-year-old Cuban finished the game 3-for-5 with six RBIs, as Houston beat Kansas City 10-8. With his two-homer performance, Álvarez tied for the MLB home run lead at 24, matching Kyle Schwarber of the Philadelphia Phillies.
A native of Las Tunas, Cuba, Álvarez made his MLB debut with the Astros in 2019 and was named American League Rookie of the Year. The three-time All-Star was the ALCS MVP in 2021 and was a key piece of Houston's 2022 World Series championship. His 2026 campaign has been among the best of his career, keeping him firmly in the conversation for the American League Most Valuable Player award.
