Aldo López Gavilán Junco

Pianist and composer. Young musician winner of numerous awards in more than a dozen competitions held in various parts of the world; also recipient of the Cubadisco 2000 award for his first CD In the Twilight of the Ant and the Elephant which was subsequently nominated for the Latin Grammys.

Born in La Habana, on December 20, 1979. He studied at the Manuel Saumell and Amadeo Roldán conservatories, and completed his studies at the Academy of Music in Londres, Inglaterra.

In 1990 he obtained the Grand Prize and special awards for the performance of Cuban music and the execution of works of his own creation, at the Amadeo Roldán Piano Competition; award in the Junior category of the I UNEAC Piano Competition, 1994; awards in the Danny Kaje competitions, UNICEF, Holanda; Sinigalia, Italia, 1998; second place in the Teresa Carreño Piano Competition, Venezuela, 1998.

First Prize in the Piano Competition of the Trinity College School of Music, Inglaterra, 1999; Third prize in the International Piano Competition, Inglaterra, 2000; Third prize in the International Piano Competition Spanish Composers, sponsored by SGAE, España, 2000.

First Prize in the International Piano Soloist Competition, 2002, convened by Trinity College de Londres, Inglaterra, on which occasion he performed Concerto No. 3, for piano and orchestra, by Serguei Prokofiev, accompanied by the Symphony Orchestra of the Institution that awarded him the prize, conducted by Peter Stark.

As a composer, he cultivates fusion jazz. He has toured Santo Domingo, Venezuela, España, Inglaterra (in this country he performed at the Royal Festival Hall de Londres), at the Jazz Plaza Festival, La Habana, and at Cubadisco 2000, he obtained, for In the Twilight of the Ant and the Elephant, the Award, the Opera prima and the Grand Prize shared with Osdalgia.
