Frederich Cepeda added another chapter to Cuban baseball history on Saturday, October 17, when he hit his 400th career home run in the Cuban National Series. The veteran Sancti Spíritus outfielder became just the fourth player to reach that milestone in the island's domestic championship, according to the Cuban News Agency (ACN) and Radio Sancti Spíritus.
The blast came with two outs and two runners on in the bottom of the seventh inning at José Antonio Huelga stadium. The three-run shot pulled the Gallos to within 10-8, but the Ciego de Ávila Tigres held on to win 11-8. Cepeda went 3-for-5 on the day, and the homer was his third of the 65th National Series.
Only Orestes Kindelán (487), Lázaro Junco (405) and Omar Linares (404) sit ahead of him on the all-time list. Citing records kept by statistician Benigno Daquinta, ACN noted that the player nicknamed "Gallo Mayor" hit his first National Series homer on October 31, 1998, and his 300th on August 24, 2019, both at his home ballpark.
At 46 and in his 28th season, Cepeda now trails Linares by four and Junco by five, putting second place on the all-time list within reach.
