Yolandita Ruiz
Died: October 1, 2019
"Yolanda is an essential reference in the image I had of 'the great young lady of Cuban television'". "She is a scenic monster that brings incredible richness to the production. She brought out the best in herself and adapted to more contemporary concepts. Without a doubt, she is one of the great 'discoveries' of the staging," theatrical director Laura Cid has expressed about Yolanda.
She studied at the ICR School of Actor Training and had among her teachers Alejandro Lugo.
I dare to say that there is no Cuban over forty years old who, no matter where they live, does not crack a smile when Yolandita is mentioned. In Cuban television she developed an interesting artistic career, earning, through quality interpretation and personal charm, the admiration and respect of the public and her colleagues.
She acted many times under the direction of Loly Buján and other great directors in those dramatic programs that made history. Loly considered her an excellent young actress with great potential and gave her important roles, integrating her into the team of great performers she usually worked with (Paulín, Toraño, Dantés, Margarita Balboa, Verónica, Miriam Mier, Josefina Henríquez, Miguel Navarro).
In the 1970s and 1980s, she reached the top levels of popularity with the premiere of Ramona, a soap opera in which she starred opposite Fidel Pérez Michel. But it was not until her launching in the soap opera La dama de blanco that she achieved star status, a television adaptation of Wilkie Collins' novel that achieved high audience levels.
Among her theatrical works worth mentioning is Una casa colonial, a comedy by Nicolás Dorr that packed the National Theater of Cuba for several seasons in the early 1980s. She also achieved success in El alma encantada and Ramona.
In 1981 she was called to play one of her most memorable roles in the series Juan Quinquín.
In 1996 she moved to Venezuela where she was a professor at the Centro de Formación del Artista Integral de Caracas, in a cultural exchange, and worked at a Venevisión academy. From there she went to Italy in the late nineties, where she taught Spanish phonetics courses. And a few years later, in 2005 she moved to Spain where she worked as an actress, director and acting teacher.
In 2012 she performed in Miami and headed the cast of El juego de Electra, a Mephisto Teatro production based on a play by Virgilio Piñera, directed by Liuba Cid.
Yolandita died in a hospital in Madrid at age 63 on October 1, 2019 from cancer.
