Amelita Pita
Died: October 18, 2002
Known as Amelita Pita. Outstanding Cuban actress in radio, television, film, and theater.
She was born in La Habana. Daughter of Francisco Pita Rodríguez, known as "Pacopé" and brother of the great Cuban writer Félix Pita Rodríguez, he was a popular commentator on artistic entertainment in newspapers of his time, such as El País.
Her connection to art began in childhood when she received acting, ballet, and singing lessons.
Amelita was founder of the Rita Montaner Theater Company, in which in 1964 — just two years after the theater group was founded — she starred in the production Arsenic and Old Lace, a work by Joseph Kesselring directed artistically by Cuqui Ponce de León and Rogelio Rodríguez, and in which she performed alongside José Hermida and Fernando Robles.
She was also a member since its creation of the Bertolt Brecht Political Theater Group, under the general direction of Mario Balmaseda, in which she participated in many of its works, such as The Kremlin Chimes.
At the end of the 1980s she performed with great success from both the public and critics a monologue by playwright Héctor Quintero titled That's Fantastic, with which she traveled to several countries, including México and Ecuador.
On television, her appearances in Cuban telenovelas The Year That Comes and If You Could Love Me are remembered.
