President Donald Trump announced on October 30 on his Truth Social platform that he backs the re-election of Republican congressman Carlos Giménez, the only Cuba-born member of the U.S. Congress.
Giménez, who has represented Florida's 28th district since 2021, faces Democrat Phil Ehr again on Tuesday, November 3, after beating him by a wide margin in 2024. Independent candidate Eddy Rojas is also on the ballot.
The district covers parts of southwest Miami-Dade County and the Florida Keys. For its part, the Miami Herald editorial board endorsed Ehr on September 25.
Giménez was born in Havana on January 17, 1954, and came to the United States with his family in November 1960. He spent about 25 years with Miami Fire-Rescue, rising to fire chief, and was Miami-Dade County mayor from 2011 to 2020 before joining the House of Representatives.
