Gloria and Emilio Estefan received the Hispanic Society of America's Sorolla Medal on Thursday, October 29, at a gala held at the Metropolitan Club in New York, the news agency EFE and Spain's El Debate reported.

The institution honored the Cuban-born couple for widening the international reach of Latin music, for their careers as entrepreneurs and for their work promoting Hispanic culture. The singer and the producer, both born in Cuba and based in Miami, shared the evening with other honorees: Argentine businessman and collector Eduardo Costantini, founder of the Museo de Arte Latinoamericano de Buenos Aires (Malba), and the legacy of Dominican designer Oscar de la Renta, whose medal was accepted by his widow, Annette de la Renta.

The Sorolla Medals, named after Valencian painter Joaquín Sorolla, recognize outstanding contributions to the arts and culture of the Hispanic world. The Manhattan-based Hispanic Society was founded in 1904 by philanthropist Archer Milton Huntington and holds one of the largest collections of Spanish art outside Spain.

The award adds to a long list of honors for the couple, who through Miami Sound Machine and Gloria's solo career carried Cuban and Latin rhythms onto charts around the world.
