Cuban actress and presenter with a career in film, theater, and television. Among her main works are the leading roles in feature films such as Conducta, La película de Ana, Melaza, and Habana Eva.
A graduate of the Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA), she has received awards throughout her career for her performances, notably the ACE Critics' Prize from the New York Latino Film Festival for Best Supporting Actress for "La Película de Ana" in 2014 and the Best Female Performance in theater award for the play "Mecánica" in 2015.
From a young age she felt drawn to the arts, although her talents were not evident. She pursued this path, graduating in the Acting specialty in the 2006 class of ISA, despite being encouraged by her family to study Medicine or Economics.
Her debut occurred in 1998, playing Lalita in the theatrical work "Contigo Pan y Cebolla" by Héctor Quintero.
"It was the character I debuted with in professional theater and on television. Thanks to that character I met Héctor Quintero and learned so much. I worked with excellent actors while still a teenager, that shaped me."
This piece was adapted for television, marking her first appearance in a medium that, despite not being her priority, has accompanied her throughout her career.
On the small screen she has gained greater exposure as a presenter in formats such as the music program "Piso 6" and the talent search competition La Banda Gigante produced by RTV Comercial, a division of the Instituto Cubano de Radio y Televisión (ICRT) in 2019. She has also worked in dramatized productions such as "Helado tropical," "Mi Caballero de París," "Leyendas de sal," "Apuntaladas," and "Karma." Film and theater command her attention, as she has acknowledged, she loves them in that order, which is why she has devoted most of her professional life to pursuing projects in these media.
"Acting for me is vital, it is a necessity. You learn to look within, to bare your soul. In theater and film I have found diverse and complex characters. I give of myself and they leave in me the sensation of having lived another life."
After her debut, she worked sporadically on stage until 2008 when she joined the Argos Teatro company directed by playwright and pedagogue Carlos Celdrán, National Theater Prize winner 2016. Since then she has starred in works such as "Aire Frío" for which she received the Honorary Award "Adria Santana" for her interpretation of Luz Marina Romaguera and "Fíchenla si pueden," an adaptation by Carlos Celdrán of the original "La ramera respetuosa" by Jean Paul Sartre. For this theatrical performance she received an acting award in 2014.
"Luz Marina Romaguera is another of my beloved characters and one to whom I owe much. Cuba has great writers and intellectuals and Virgilio is one of the greatest. He is immense. Aire frío is a classic of Cuban theater for its truthful and bitter portrayal of society and family, told through the Romagueras. Luz Marina, its protagonist, manages to enchant the audience with her sharp tongue, her grace, sacrifice, and love for family, especially for her brother Oscar. Virgilio created an extraordinary work. Luz Marina is a key character in my career."
Similarly, another of her works was playing Nara Telmer in the play Mecánica alongside actor Carlos Luis González, an adaptation by playwright Abel González Melo based on "Casa de Muñecas" by Henry Ibsen. Uncle Vanya (2014), Talco (2010), and Ábalon, una noche en Bangkok (2008) are other productions she has starred in.
Yuliet has committed to film and has accumulated several works on the big screen. She brought to life characters such as Sonia in the feature film Conducta (2014) and Miriam in Esteban (2016), characterized by acceptance from both the public and specialized critics.
Sergio y Sergéi (2017), Se Vende (2012), Melaza (2012), Habana Eva (2010), Habana Blues (2005), and La película de Ana (2012) for which she earned the ACE Critics' Prize from the New York Latino Film Festival for Best Supporting Actress, are some of the film productions in which she has made her mark.
Yuliet Cruz is the mother of two children, Sebastián and Samuel, from her marriage to Cuban singer and composer Leoni Torres.
