Yulién Oviedo Sánchez

Yuli, El chiquitico jefe

From a very early age he began his musical endeavors with his father Calixto Oviedo who has always helped and supported him in his training.

He began playing when he was a year and a half old with the Orquesta de Adalberto Álvarez y su Son, then with NG La Banda countless times and even recorded a song with them on the CD Desde el Patio de mi Casa. El Tosco went to look for his dad for the editing of some bells he wanted to arrange and since his father wasn't there, he brought Yulién who was the one who did the recording.

He studied at the Conservatorio "Manuel Saumell" and later at the Escuela Nacional de Arte. At 11 years old he recorded timpani and quinto on the AfroCuban All Stars CD, in addition to recording a song on the album of the unforgettable Rubén González, with maracas on the album Havana Calling, Gracias Formell on Mayito Rivera's album, and on other recordings by musicians such as the work done with the group Gente de Zona.

He participated in international tours starting at age 8 alongside his father. Young Oviedo was studying percussion at Saumell, when at 14 years old (1995) he requested leave to travel to Italy and perform in the competition-show "Bravo, bravísimo" with the other 4 most talented children in the world, accompanied by the Italian TV Orchestra. After this he toured with NG la Banda through Japan, Mexico and other countries, not to mention that he continued participating in competitions, festivals and workshops, and even became a professor. Previously he had participated in the program Sábado Chiquito from the Dominican Republic alongside his father and sharing the stage with important figures in Santo Domingo's music scene. On a tour with NG La Banda in Japan, at 11 years old.

He never stopped working, but played, among others, with "Aché Junior", "Los Chicos de la Salsa", "PG", "Química Perfecta", and his favorite orchestra…la Charanga Habanera, which he joined at the rather late age of 15.

He participated with his dad on a European tour with singer Luis Frank and musicians from Buena Vista Social Club, parallel to his work as a charanguero. Additionally, he has recorded countless albums such as "Afro Cuban All Stars", "Buena Vista Social Club", "La recompensa" with his dad, "Gracias Formell"; and with figures like Tatagüines, Angá, Compay Segundo, Alemañy, etc. Orchestras with which he has recorded: NG la Banda, Issac Delgado…and the list is endless. As he himself says, "with countless orchestras".

In the Charanga his role was as a paila player…WAS. Because this child genius sang (and how!), danced, and opened the show. "El chiquitico jefe", one of the key figures in the charanguero choreographies, and the most important voice of one of the Charanga's hits, singing bass in the ballad "Entra en mi vida". At the beginning of the show, after the classic opening "In the stone", Yulién came out from the pailas and was in charge of the presentation number…with a question… "are you ready for my Charanga?"

Currently he works with his project Yulién Oviedo y su Onda Light
