Yordenis Ugás Hernández

Ugás is a Cuban professional boxer. He is best known for winning the 2005 Amateur Boxing World Championship at lightweight at 19 years old after Mario Kindelan, he is the current regular world champion at welterweight.

Ugás was U17 (cadets) world champion in 2003, but lost in the 2004 youth championships against Amir Khan. On other occasions he lost twice to his compatriot Luis Franco at featherweight, finishing third in the 2004 nationals at featherweight.

In 2005 he moved up to lightweight, where he had more success, won the Cuban Championship from 2005 to 2008 and became a star. He won a tournament called the PanAm Championship (not the PanAm Games) in 2005, however, in other tournaments he lost twice to the Kazakh southpaw, Serik Sapiyev.

At the 2005 Senior World Championship, he suffered two strong knockdowns against the Canadian southpaw Ibrahim Kamal in his third fight, but managed to win. Later, Ugás defeated the Russian Khabib Allakhverdiyev and in the final defeated Romal Amanov of Azerbaijan. In 2006 he won the Central American Championship. He was part of the Cuban team that won the 2006 World Boxing Cup.​

In 2007 he defeated Yordan Frometa and Roniel Iglesias in the national championships. Later, that same year, Ugás won the Pan American Games in Rio defeating Darley Pérez and Everton Lopes. Cuba did not participate in the World Championships in Chicago.

In 2008 he defended the national championships against his old rival Luis Franco and won his Olympic qualification. In Beijing he was frustrated in the semifinal by the Frenchman Daouda Sow.

In 2009 he moved up to junior welterweight defeating Roniel Iglesias in the national final. In March 2010, Ugás moved to the United States hoping to begin a professional career. Ugás moved to North Bergen, New Jersey in 2012.
