He is a professional boxer in the heavyweight category born in Cuba. He won the gold medal at the 2004 Athens Olympic Games and has also been a three-time winner of the Amateur World Boxing Championship.

His first success as an amateur boxer was in 1998, winning the junior Panamerican title in Toluca and also winning the junior world championship in Buenos Aires.

In 1999, he won the Cuban championship by defeating Félix Savón, successfully defending it five more times, until 2004.

In 2005 he moved up in category, from heavyweight to super heavyweight and lost the final of the World Team Cup in Moscow, Russia, against Islam Timurziev (26-27). Solis took revenge on Timurziev on October 21 in Baku, Azerbaijan, by TKO in round 3, winning 1st place in the Nations Cup. In 2006 he won the national title for the seventh time.

He fought Félix Savón whom he beat twice and lost once, against Robert Alfonso with three victories, Michel López Núñez with three victories and three defeats, Osmay Acosta, Islam Timurziev with one victory and one defeat, Roman Romanchuk with one victory and two defeats, David Halle, Vyacheslav Glazkov, Kubrat Pulev with three victories and one defeat and Sultán Ibragímov whom he beat in both occasions they faced each other.

His amateur record was 227 victories for 14 defeats, noting that he never lost in a major event, such as world championships or Olympic Games.

As a Professional Boxer
In December 2006 he deserted the Cuban national team during a training session in Venezuela that was serving as preparation for the Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro.

Solis made his professional debut on April 27, 2007 and did so at a weight of 258 and a half pounds compared to the 230 pounds he was accustomed to in his amateur days. In that first fight he defeated veteran boxer Andreas Sidon at 47 seconds of the first round.
He would later fight Ukrainian Alex Mazikin whom he also defeated by knockout in the first round. His next fight he won by unanimous decision against Swedish/African boxer Aldo Colliander on July 6, 2007. On September 21 he would return to the ring against Marcus McGee and then against Jeremy Bates whom he defeated before the limit. His first important fight was against Julius Long for the vacant Latino title of the World Boxing Council and he won by unanimous decision in eight rounds after knocking Long down at the beginning of the fight.

On February 29, 2008 he had another fight against Adrian Rajkai whom he defeated by knockout in three rounds after knocking him down once in the second round and twice in the third. Also in 2008 he had two more fights, which he won, one by decision against Cisse Salif and the other by knockout in the second round against Mamuka Jikurashvili.

In 2011 he will attempt to become world champion.
