Paulo Alfonso Fernández Gallo

Paulito FG, Paulo FG

Paulito FG is considered a major league musician, an artist in every sense of the word, who has managed to develop a career using great intelligence and displaying tremendous talent, giving his love for art in every performance. The composer and performer has had a successful artistic career that has granted him recognition for having been the lead vocalist of prestigious groups.

At age 19 he began taking clarinet lessons at the Ignacio Cervantes Conservatory of Music. His unique-timbred voice caught attention and he was recommended to specialists at the Benny Moré Musical Company, beginning his career as a professional singer.

In 1986 he performed at the Varadero International Festival with Adalberto Álvarez y su Son.

Two years later he was already the star singer of the group Dan Den, led by Juan Carlos Alfonso, a band in which two of his songs, "El humo o la vida" and "Siempre hay un ojo que te ve", placed him in the top ranks of popularity.

In 1991 he recorded with Opus 13, a group directed by maestro Joaquín Betancourt, his first album, in which almost all the tracks are his own compositions.

The following year he conducted a successful tour of Mexico and in 1992 he returned to Havana and founded his own group, "Paulito FG y su Élite", debuting on April 19 at the Hotel Neptuno in Havana.

His first album, "Tú no me calculas", was recorded in 1993 with his group, with simultaneous release in Havana and Tokyo. It was a complete success.

In 1994 he signed with Magic Music of Barcelona and recorded his second album, "Sofocándote", which remained for 22 weeks on the national radio Hit Parade.

Paulito's third album, "El bueno soy yo" was released in 1996 and its impact was unprecedented. At the EGREM Awards ceremony for best discography of the year, he won awards in the Dance Music category and the Popularity category.

In 1997 he recorded his fourth album for Fania: "Con la conciencia tranquila", and several of his songs topped national and international charts.

The following year he recorded an album in tribute to Puerto Rican Tito Rodríguez, titled (Tributo a Tito Rodríguez) in which he included boleros and guarachas from the 1960s, and in 2000 he released his album, "Una vez más por amor", another national and international success.

The album "Te deseo suerte" was released in 2002 and once again swept the Hit Parade charts in Cuba and abroad.

In 2005 he recorded with BISMUSIC the CD "Ilusión", an album of classic boleros, recontextualized to the contemporaneity of Paulito's interpretation, accompanied by his band La Élite, with musical direction by Fernando Soria and Ángel Martínez, as well as the elaborate work of arrangements by Soria and Paulito, winning the Award for Best Proposal in the "Cancionística" category during the FESTIVAL CUBADISCO 2006 ceremony.

In 2006, Paulo FG records his CD "Un poquito de to´" also with BISMUSIC, placing several of his songs in national and international preference and occupying the top positions in popularity, television and radio ratings. On this occasion Paulo intelligently fuses son, rock, rumba, jazz, rap and reggaeton.

In 2010 he records his most recent production "Sin etiqueta", this album is basically Cuban timba with some genre variety. All the songs included on this album have been very well received by national and international audiences.

Since 1992 Paulito FG has taken his musical proposal to stages in about twenty countries and his songs have topped the radio charts in New York, Miami, Lima and Bogotá.

Important stars of New York and Puerto Rico salsa have covered his songs, such as Jhonny Rivera and Isidro Infante. In his country, Cuba, he has led most popularity polls from his beginnings to the present day.

Today's Paulito distinguishes himself through works of studied melodic lines, unconventional rhythmic passages, restrained rock energy and lyrics that, while being faithful chronicles of his time, do not give in to easy or vulgar approaches.

Paulo FG represents the expressiveness of the Cuban street person, the rich poetry of the popular bard and the presence of the life around us, as real as it presents itself. He manages to fuse various currents such as rock, ballad, jazz and son, achieving a mixture full of innovative texts imprinting his particular stamp.

For many critics he is a revelation, for his audience, the most popular of these times and for himself: "a devoted cinephile" and faithful lover of Jazz in his spare time. And above all, someone respectful of the public and absolutely in love with music.

Improvisations that border on the dazzlement of Cuban musical tradition are the premises of Paulo FG, together with a fabulous mixture of popular roots, creativity and current sounds that make him unique, attractive and always engaging.
