Margarita Horruitiner López

Died: May 26, 1998

Born in Santiago de Cuba, the soprano and pedagogue.

She acquired her vocal technique in La Habana, guided by maestro Dominicis, who presented her in public recitals (1936) and had her make her professional debut as a member of Ópera Nacional, where she starred, always conducted by her maestro, in Puccini's opera Tosca at Teatro Nacional in 1939 and some fragments from La rondine by the same author (1942), in its first hearing in Cuba.

Other roles performed by her were Mimì (from La bohème) and Micaéla (from Carmen), which she sang in the United States alongside Spanish tenor Pablo Civil with the San Carlo Opera Co.

Until 1956 she developed extensive work as a concert performer, accompanied by Alfredo Levy, Rafael Morales, Francisco Godino, among other eminent Cuban pianists.

Dedicated to teaching for several decades, she was a teacher to a multitude of contemporary Cuban singers, among whom stand out sopranos Lucy Provedo, Emelina López, María Esther Pérez, and Amalia Arriaza.

In the 1950s she was part of the Cuban diplomatic corps.
