Osdalgia, La Nueva Voz de Cuba, la ¨doña¨
Osdalgia. Called since her recording debut in 2000 "The New Voice of Cuba". Singer, composer, actress, successful and popular writer known for her guarachas, afros, filin and Caribbean fusions linked to jazz. With a Latin Grammy to her credit, she is one of the most important voices of Cuban Culture in the 21st century.
She was born in Luyanó, Havana, Cuba. Her mother was a seamstress and her father, a graduate in History, Languages and Social Sciences, gave her a strict education and encouraged her vocation in the Arts and Exact Sciences. However, her education and upbringing took place in the neighborhoods of Jesús María and Belén, Old Havana, and the girl would escape home to attend popular parties and concerts of danzones, rumbas, boleros and children's songs. Because of her concerns, temperament and character, her parents had to constantly change her schools, while her teachers, confident in her high academic standing, assigned her artistic tasks, even during class hours: singing, dancing, recitation and painting. At that time one of her aunts, Luisa Maria Lesmes, a chorister and actress at the Havana Musical Theater, began taking her to rehearsals and performances of this "vernacular" theater. The girl also learned about the music and entertainment world of cabarets, clubs and the whirlwind of television. This defined her empirical development.
At age 13 the family moved away from the city to a coastal working-class neighborhood, Alamar, where during that period "the arts were silent". Then she devoted herself to poetry while listening to Rock and the singer-songwriters of the New Trova. At 15 she received a scholarship for her pre-university studies and there she joined the "XX Anniversary Artistic Brigade", achieving in 1986 that the Hermanos Saiz Association (AHS) gave her First Mention for her poetry notebook "Una pieza soy". She then collaborated with troubadours Alberto Tosca, Gerardo Alfonso and Xiomara Laugart and, taking advantage of the concerts that Silvio Rodriguez and Pablo Milanés offered in schools, Osdalgia would perform alongside them accompanied by an amateur guitarist.
In 1988, at 18 years old, she began her studies at the University of Havana for a degree in Economics, Accounting and Finance, while also joining the Film Club group "Sigma" directed by filmmaker Tomás Piard. She acted in fiction short films and was called to be cast in the avant-garde fiction feature film "La posibilidad infinita".
She began studying Performing Arts in 1989, graduating as an Actress, Stage Director and Professor of Performing Arts.
On December 15, 1992, she made her debut as a vocalist in the female vocal quartet "Las Sepias de Fuego", the basis of the show "Salseando" on the great stage of the "Cabaret Parisién", under the musical direction of Maestro Miguel Paterson.
In January 1994 she was chosen by Maestro flutist and director of "NG la Banda" José Luis Cortés "el tosco" to join the female vocal quintet "Las Nuevas Mulatas de Fuego".
In 1995 she decided to deepen her vocal and musical knowledge, so she joined the septet "Los Siete del Son" and was called by the group "Canela" to be their lead vocalist. With them she recorded the CD "Llegó el momento" under the German record label Welt Wunder Records.
In January 1996 she joined the timba orchestra "Las chicas del sabor", also as lead vocalist, and developed her histrionics and improvisation in crowded plazas sharing the stage with "Paulito FG", "Charanga Habanera", "Los Van Van" and "Manolín, el médico de la salsa". At the end of 1996 she worked with the jazz quintet "Perspectiva" under the direction of bassist Jorge Reyes, and with the female Latin pop rock trio "Aries", under the mentorship of Lynn Milanés.
She began her solo career in 1997 and sought her place within the bolero and filin genres on the café bolero stage "Novia mía" at the Plaza Hotel. Meanwhile, she participated in different musical recording productions by the Caribbean Productions label alongside important Cuban song artists: Lino Borges, Beatriz Márquez, Mundito Gonzalez, Omara Portuondo and others.
In mid-1997, she traveled to Italy where she spent a long period collaborating with Italian television RAI UNO and performed in Latin music festivals. She gave lectures on literature, theater and art at the Schule fur Dichtung in Vienna, Austria. Her repertoire then expanded with the use of English, Italian and Portuguese.
Upon her return to Cuba she signed in May 1998 an exclusivity contract with the French record label LUSAFRICA and recorded, under the musical direction of Orlando Valle "Maracas", the CD "Afro Cuban Jazz Project". In 1998 she also revived her passion for filin and took the stage of the "Gato Tuerto". On that stage she began to be accompanied by her inseparable guitarist Vidal Tarín and, eventually, she "jammed" her very particular filin style accompanied by the virtuoso hands of Maestro Frank Fernandez, alongside Elena Burke, Cesar Portillo de la Luz, Lázaro Ros and other famous performers.
In January 1999 her first solo recording production "La culebra" was released with LUSAFRICA, directed musically by José Luis Cortés "el tosco", accompanied by the orchestra "NG la Banda" expanded as a jazz band. This CD offers us some pieces from the repertoire of the "Barbarian of rhythm" Beny Moré and other songs authored by Osdalgia. She traveled to Paris invited to the "Disney Land Festival" and shared the stage with the renowned and great Cuban singer Celia Cruz.
In 2000 she was called, along with José Luis Cortés and "NG la Banda", by Cuba's Ministry of Culture to contribute as "Cultural Ambassadors of Peace" in Morocco and perform for King Mohamed. She returned to Cuba and in February traveled to Panama for the city's Patron Saint celebrations, where she sang with Puerto Rican salsa artist Gilberto Santa Rosa. In March she was nominated for the 2000 Cubadisco awards for her CD "La culebra" in four categories: "Best Debut Album", "Best Popular Dance Music Album", "Best Musical Production" and "Best Recording". The Cuban press, radio and television immediately echoed Osdalgia's achievements and labeled her as "The New Voice of Cuba".
In France, Portugal, Germany and Belgium the song "La culebra" reached number 11 on the Latin hits charts. In the United States of America the song "La culebra" reached number 13 of the most listened to Latin songs. Finally, Cubadisco 2000 awarded her two prizes: "Best Current Popular Dance Music Album" and "Grand Prize Cubadisco 2000". The audiovisual contest "Lucas" nominated the music video "La culebra" in two categories: "Best New Music Video" and "Best Female Music Video". Because of her achievements that year, Osdalgia performed a grand concert at the Amadeo Roldán Theater receiving great ovation from the public and also competed in the Adolfo Guzmán event, winning the third award in composition and performance.
In 2001 she began production of her second CD "Mi armonía", also under the musical direction of José Luis Cortés "el tosco" and with the record label LUSAFRICA. Two of her songs, "Tu beribé" and "!Qué calor!", became hits, positively emphasizing her artistic quality. The song "Quién te dijo?" was performed and awarded in the international OTI competition. The Cubadisco event that year nominated the CD "Mi armonía" in the "Best Female Album" category, and its homonymous music video was nominated by Lucas as "Best Female Music Video".
The year 2002 arrived and she was called again by film and television director Tomas Piard to play a character in his teleplay "El sueño y un día" and to write the main theme of the soundtrack titled "De mi sueño y de ti". Osdalgia participated alongside Omara Portuondo and Polo Montañés at the dinner auction of the International Cuban Habano Festival. She was then called by filmmaker and television director Senobio "puri" Faget to act and sing in the documentary film "El son te salió redondo", dedicated to the musical work of poet Nicolás Guillén. Here she performs musicalized poems once sung by Rita Montaner, Mercedita Valdés and Bola de Nieve. She also acted in the police serial for Cuban television "Operación coraje", directed by Jesús Cabrera. With the consent of filmmaker Wim Wenders, Argentine film director Germán Kral called Osdalgia, along with Pío Leyva and other prestigious musicians, to the cast of the film "Música Cubana", co-produced between England, Germany, Japan and Cuba. With this film Osdalgia was called "The daughter of the Buena Vista Social Club". To conclude this period, she traveled to the Cape Verde islands, France and Portugal to be accompanied by the orchestra of singer Cesaria Évora.
The filming of the movie "Música Cubana", which began in 2002 in Havana, ended in 2003 in Tokyo, Japan, with a live concert for more than four thousand spectators. During the rest of 2003 Osdalgia performed multiple concerts in Cuba, on national television and on various stages: "Gato Tuerto", "Delirio Habanero", "El Diablo tún tún", "Habana Café", "Salón Rojo" of the Capri, "Copa Run" and others.
In 2004 she was invited by Habanos S.A. along with pianist Gonzalito Rubalcaba, percussionist Tata Güines and the orchestra "Pachito Alonso y sus Kini Kini", to perform a European tour (France, Italy, Germany, Denmark, Spain). She returned to Cuba and returned to the stage of the Amadeo Roldan Theater, achieving resounding success among professional critics of popular and concert music. She also performed at Bellas Artes accompanied only by piano and guitar.
In 2005 the musical production of her third CD "Suenan los Cueros" was directed by saxophonist and arranger Juan Manuel Ceruto. The repertoire of this CD was based on modern traditional music influenced by Jazz. For this the singer grouped fourteen songs, ten of which were authored by her. This album was nominated by Cubadisco 2005 in two categories: "Best Traditional Popular Music Album" and "Best Recording Production of the Year". It was later awarded as "Best Traditional Popular Music Album". However, she demonstrated that she would not be "pigeonholed" as a traditional performer when, to the surprise of many, she accepted the invitation to participate in the alternative festival "Cuerda Viva", singing alongside the Cuban rock band "Tendencia". She also participated alongside other prestigious musicians and performers in the production of the album "Cuba canta a Serrat", a tribute to Spanish singer-songwriter Joan Manuel Serrat by the record company EGREM under the direction of arranger and musical producer Emilio Vega. This album was awarded a Latin Grammy as "Best Contemporary Tropical Album" of 2005.
Also, the Lucas 2005 music video contest nominated and awarded her video "La sesión", considered to this day one of the 100 best Cuban music videos already converted into classics. Nominations: "Best Female Music Video", "Best Traditional Music Video" and "Best Special Effects". Awards: "Best Female Music Video" and "Best Traditional Music Video".
In 2006 she was contacted by Swiss producers to write the main theme for the soundtrack of a feature-length documentary film titled "La reina del condón". She concluded her contract with LUSAFRICA and signed with the Italian label Planet Records to produce a single of her authorship "Halo de luna", which managed to place itself within the Latin radio hits in Italy that summer. Osdalgia traveled with her musical group to Kars, Turkey, for the International Caucasus Festival. And for her performance, she received a special decoration that is still displayed today at the Museum of Music in Havana. At the end of the year she was invited by David Calzado and "La Charanga Habanera" to perform a major European tour.
In 2007 she participated again at the International Habano Festival. This time accompanied by the great multi-Grammy-winning pianist Chucho Valdés.
In 2009 Osdalgia returned to the stage of the International Habano Festival accompanied by the orchestra of singer-songwriter and arranger David Álvarez. At the end, Osdalgia performed a national tour with her musical group promoting a show called "Como las flores", under her artistic direction and achieving total success. She also participated in the filming of the documentary "One among thousands" directed by American filmmaker Carlos G. Maier.
2010 began with her starring in the most stellar hours of the Cubavisión channel of Cuban Television, as host of the program "Tu música mí", a live musical magazine. In this program Osdalgia sings, dances, acts and conducts interviews. Italian filmmaker Claudio del Punta proposed that she write the lyrics and music for four songs for the soundtrack of the film in production "Una danza para mi Habana". At the end of 2010, she was called by the Panamanian Foundation PROBIDSIDA to the Charity Concert "Gran Cena de la Cinta Roja" in Panama, with the support of the First Lady of that country.
In January 2011 she gave concerts with her musical group aboard the Finnish cruise ship "Amorella" of the Viking Line, sailing the Baltic Sea. In April 2011 the renowned DJ Gilles Peterson and Havana Club Internacional S.A. became interested in her voice and her composition to be part of the album "Havana Cultura, the search continues" alongside other important young musicians of different musical trends and genres. The foundations Miami Light Project and Fundarte, in connection with the "Global Cuba Fest" event, invited Osdalgia along with her guitarist Vidal Tarín to a great concert on the stage of Wynwood Walls in Miami. Receiving excellent reviews from El Nuevo Herald. The "live" performance was recorded by "Generación Asere" and placed on Facebook, Twitter and YouTube with a large number of visitors. La Mega TV and other channels fell in love with her voice and passionate and virtuoso Cuban image. There in Miami, she alternated and interacted on the stage of the Coffee Concert "Hoy como Ayer" with Cuban artists Aimeé Nuviola, Malena Burke, Alexis Valdés, Doble Filo and the alternative electronic group "Spam All Star". Upon her return to Havana she began a national tour on the Cuban island through ARTEX nightclubs called "Agita!". This year she was part of the project: Gilles Peterson presents "Havana Cultura Band" and traveled to Europe for the album launch. They performed in techno and Latin music nightclubs, on French radio and the internet.
In 2012 she continued with the Gilles Peterson and Havana Cultura Band project and traveled to France for the celebration of the Havana Club Internacional Award sponsored by Pernot Ricard on the island of Lez Embiez, Toulon. To Cologne, Germany, for the promotion of Havana Cultura Band. This unique project was in charge of inaugurating the 11th Havana Biennial with a magnificent presentation in Havana, at La Tropical for more than three thousand people. And she traveled again to Germany -Munich-, for promotions of Havana Club and Havana Cultura alongside Gilles Peterson. Upon her return, the singer along with her group were called to perform at the Grand Prix de Havana Club festival and they added her to their website as an artist in their catalog. Osdalgia, under the direction of filmmaker Lester Hamlet, recorded a concert at the Bellas Artes theater in Havana, called "Osdalgia desde el Cine" with a view toward a new CD/DVD. Then, in collaboration with Puerto Rican Carmenchi García, Osdalgia created her independent production label MIMISMAPRODUCTIONS21 and proceeded to complete the CD "Osdalgia contigo, live". She traveled to the United States of America: participated in a tribute concert to the work of the Diego sisters in Miami, "Divas cantan a las Diego". She presented her album "Osdalgia Contigo Live" to the media in San Juan, Puerto Rico. And performed, invited by the Academy of Music of Brooklyn (BAM), at BAM Opera House within the "Red Hot+Cuba" show by BAM in New York.

With more than one hundred artists on stage. In March she traveled to Puerto Rico and sang alongside great Puerto Rican performer Dany Rivera, with the Big Band Jazz of excellent saxophonist and director Humberto Ramirez, and once again alongside Gilberto Santa Rosa.
