Luis Alberto Orta Sánchez

Pocholo

Luis Alberto Orta, Cuba's representative in the 60 kg Greco-Roman wrestling category, was the surprise in the first day of competitions in his discipline. He stepped onto the mat impetuously, confident that he would achieve his first victory in his participation under the five rings.

Luis Orta is an explosive and intelligent gladiator on the mat. His composure and the profuse beard on his face give him an appearance of greater maturity.

His name rings loudly in the realm of Cuban sports wrestling after winning twice in the 60 kg category of the Pan-American sports championship (2018-2019), and after reigning in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla.

He lives in the La Güinera neighborhood in the Arroyo Naranjo municipality in Havana.

Sports Career
2017 - 2021

He won the gold medal in the Central American and Caribbean Games in Barranquilla 2018 in which he competed against Mexican Emilio Pérez, whom he dominated 9-0.

At the Pan-American Games in Lima he lost to Ecuadorian Andrés Montaño in the quarterfinals, but in the repechage he took the bronze medal by technical superiority over Venezuelan Anthony Palencia.

He obtained the gold medal in the 60 kg category at the International Cerro Pelado-Granma Wrestling Tournament, which celebrated its 53rd edition at the Coliseum of the Sports City in Havana, in February 2020.

Luis Orta in the 60 kg category, a bold young man who, setting out from Havana toward the Tokyo Olympics in Japan, announced that he was coming to beat everyone and he delivered, leaving half the world astonished on August 2, 2021.

Ildar Hafizov (5-0), Sergey Emelin (4-3), Víctor Ciobanu (11-0, ST) and Kenichiro Fumita (5-1), the latter in the final, yielded to his quality and that state of grace in which some champions usually appear. This time, I believe, he could even beat Mijaín…

The scene of his victory will be remembered for its sentiment, because few counted on his crown and he rose up when it was needed, when the homeland needed these genuine waves of pride. What a wrestling day in Tokyo! Glory to them!.
