Cuban Luis Alberto Orta Nominated as Greco-Roman Wrestler of the Year

United World Wrestling (UWW) nominated Cuban athlete Luis Alberto Orta as the Greco-Roman Wrestler of 2023.

This year 2023 has been full of triumphs and achievements for Cubans in various disciplines, and of course among them are sports. Consequently, such is the case of the talented Cuban wrestler Luis Alberto Orta, who during this year has excelled in the Greco-Roman category.

As we previously reported, during the past month of September, Orta shone during the Greco-Roman Wrestling World Championship, held in Belgrade. As a result, he managed to raise Cuba's flag by obtaining a gold medal in the 67-kilogram category.

Apparently, his extraordinary performance in this competition not only made him a world wrestling champion, but what positioned him among the best of 2023.

Traditionally, the highest sports authority in this sport, United World Wrestling (UWW), selects the best athletes of the year. To do this, they base themselves on the performance of wrestlers from different parts of the world in the various international competitions held.

Therefore, considering the results of Cuban Luis Alberto Orta in 2023, the UWW included them among the preselected as the best Greco-Roman wrestler. In fact, our dear Luis Alberto is listed first on the list of selected wrestlers, according to the publication they recently released.

As we mentioned, Cuban Luis Alberto Orta heads the list of five nominees for Best Greco-Roman Wrestler of 2023. However, apparently, this is a preselection and it is expected that the final results will be announced soon.

In addition to Luis Alberto, four other wrestlers entered the group of the most outstanding in this sport during this year. In this way, he would be competing with Amin Mirzazadeh, from Iran; and Akzhol Majmudov and Zholaman Sharshenbekov, from Kyrgyzstan. Likewise, wrestler Leri Abuladze, from Georgia, is among those nominated as the best wrestlers.

It was also learned that Cuban wrestler Luis Alberto Orta has several awards to his credit that would give him a great advantage in the competition.

In that sense, along with the gold medal that made him world champion, the Caribbean athlete took home gold in the Pan American Wrestling Championship. Also, he was crowned with a gold medal at the XIX Pan American Games, won a bronze medal at the Zagreb Open Ranking Series and the Kyrgyzstan Ranking Series.

Therefore, the record of Cuban Luis Alberto Orta in Greco-Roman wrestling allows him to accumulate 86,400 points; which leads him to head the competition.

Congratulations to this great athlete! For Cubans it is a true source of pride that he represents us so well, and we already consider him a winner.
