Cuban sport shooting athlete. Glory of Cuban sports. By winning the gold medal in the 25-meter rapid-fire pistol specialty at the London 2012 Olympics, setting an Olympic record and tying the world record, he became the Cuban shooter with the best results in the history of that sport.
He was born in Holguín. He was in third grade at the Ateneo Fernando de Dios when he entered the world of sport shooting. His results led him to specialize at the EIDE Pedro Díaz Coello and later at the ESPA Nacional.
Since he won silver in team center fire at the National School Games in 1989, he has distinguished himself in the youth category, which he left after his last national competition, held in Holguín in 1997, with four golds and the award for best competitor.
He emerged on the international stage by winning three gold medals and one bronze in several events of his sport during the Central American and Caribbean Games in Maracaibo, Venezuela, in July 1998. The following month he was crowned champion in rapid-fire shooting at the World Cup in Buenos Aires, Argentina.
He has more than 12 appearances at these competitions, in which he added in 1998 a silver (785.4 and national record in qualifying with 587) in Rio de Janeiro and bronze in Munich.
He won three golds and one silver in various modalities at the Central American and Caribbean Games in Cartagena de Indias, 2006 and won first place (rapid-fire) at the Santo Domingo 2003 Pan American Games and the Rio de Janeiro 2007 Pan American Games.
At the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004 and Beijing 2008 Olympic Games, he finished among the top nine, along with other meritorious performances in various competitions in Cuba and abroad.
He wins Cuba's first gold medal at the London 2012 Olympic Games at the age of 35 by defeating Indian Vijay Kumar, who took silver, and Chinese Feng Ding, bronze.
