Cuban baseball player. He plays as first base for the Industriales team, and has been part of the Cuba baseball National Team several times. He has participated in 13 National Series, achieving 3 titles, all with Industriales and being named MVP (most valuable player) of the post-seasons in 2006 and 2010, coinciding with the last championships won by Industriales. With Team Cuba he obtained the silver medal at the Beijing 2008 Olympic Games and participated in the 2009 World Baseball Classic.
At 18 years old, wearing the Industriales uniform, he made his debut in the highest category of Cuban baseball in the 1995-1996 season.
During his first season he batted on 52 occasions averaging .308 with 12 runs batted in. That season, under the direction of Pedro Medina and with a roster that included high-level players such as Javier Méndez, Lázaro Vargas Germán Mesa and Juan Padilla, Industriales won their eighth title in National Series.
After his debut campaign, Alexander Malleta alternated seasons of poor individual performance and absences during the next four seasons. Thus, after a poor campaign in the 96-97 Series, he did not participate in the 97-98 season, returning to the national classics in the 1998-1999 Series this time wearing the colors of Metropolitanos.
With the "Metros" (the second team of Havana), Malleta's offensive performance was poor again, averaging only .238 in 84 official at-bats, with just 8 runs batted in. The absence again in the following Series (1999-2000) marked the end of an irregular period in terms of participation and performance in the national series. When he reappears, by the end of 2000, Malleta begins to build a record of prestige within Cuban baseball classics.
In the 2000-2001 season, Malleta's offensive breakthrough is observed, again defending the Industriales uniform. He reaches the figure of 11 home runs although still with a poor average of .234.
For the next year the average rises to .304 although he connects only one home run with just 69 at-bats. The little playing time he finds with Industriales leads him to return to Metropolitanos for the next two seasons, in which he consolidates himself as one of the best hitters in the capital at the time, connecting 26 home runs and driving in 96 runs over both seasons.
Return to Industriales and Golden Era
2004-2005
Playing again for Industriales, which was under the direction of Rey Vicente Anglada, with an offensive average of .330, 14 home runs and 68 runs batted in, Malleta becomes the first baseman and cleanup hitter for the blues. In this new stage the team had been forced to renew itself after several important losses such as those of Javier Méndez, Kendry Morales and Bárbaro Cañizares. That year, Industriales reached 5th place in the championship after the titles achieved in the two previous campaigns.
2005-2006
The 45th series of Cuban baseball was marked by a new victory for Industriales and a great performance by Malleta in the decisive playoff games. With an average of .353, with 8 home runs and 22 runs batted in (a record at the time for post-season) that led him to be selected as MVP (most valuable player), Malleta led the blues in the pursuit of their 11th title, the second for Malleta individually. In the grand final Industriales and Santiago de Cuba faced each other, a true classic of Cuban baseball, with the former prevailing 4 games to 2. Malleta decided the sixth and final game with a long home run to right field off the pitches of the outstanding Santiago pitcher Ormani Romero. Furthermore, at the end of that season, he was called to be part of Team Cuba baseball.
2006-2007
The performance in the 06-07 season was somewhat less than expected during the regular season. However, in the post-season Malleta could be seen in full offensive form, setting a new home run record for post-season series with 8 and leading Industriales to another final, despite the team's poor offensive performance. In that campaign, Malleta and Industriales reached the runner-up position, losing the final in 7 games to the same rival from the previous year, Santiago de Cuba. The spectacular performance in the playoff games (.396 average and 20 runs batted in plus the home run record) allowed Malleta to be called again to be part of Cuba's national team that year.
2007-2008
Malleta's best offensive numbers were seen in the 07-08 season, averaging a high .365 with 17 home runs and 67 runs batted in. This time, Industriales fell to sixth place in the series, after losing in the post-season matchup against its great western zone rival Pinar del Río, a team that had players such as Pedro Luis Lazo and Yosvani Peraza.
2008-2009
During the 08-09 season, Malleta had a slight offensive decline compared to previous series. Despite this, his numbers cannot be classified as bad: .286 average, 12 home runs and 56 runs batted in. This series was disastrous collectively, Industriales failed to qualify for the post-season and finished in an unusual 12th place, matching the worst historical performance of the team dating back to 1979.
2009-2010
A season of unexpected and very successful victory for Industriales, again with a brilliant performance by Malleta in the post-season. During the regular season the numbers were similar to the previous campaign, while the team achieved its qualification on the final date. Again in the playoff series, Malleta's performance was very outstanding with numbers that speak for themselves: .388 average, 4 home runs and 18 runs batted in, again deserving of the MVP title of that post-season. The final series against Villa Clara, which had been the best team of the regular campaign, was decided in 7 close games. In the last game played at Sandino Stadium in Villa Clara, Malleta hit one of the home runs of that post-season contributing to the final victory of the blues in that game.
2010-2011
Malleta had his best home run season during this Series, reaching the figure of 27 home runs (a record for capital players in any national tournament). Furthermore, his average was .322, with 76 runs batted in.1 Despite the numbers of his cleanup hitter, Industriales could not qualify for the post-season, finishing in fifth place in the western zone.
Team Cuba
With Team Cuba baseball, Malleta has participated in several international tournaments organized by the IBAF. He managed to become champion of the 2006 Intercontinental Cup in Taiwan, the 2006 Central American Games and the 2007 Rio de Janeiro Pan American Games. In 2008 he participates in the Beijing Olympic Games where the Cuban team falls in the final and obtains the silver medal. In this tournament, a controversial decision by Cuba's manager at the time, Antonio Pacheco, caused great displeasure among fans. Pacheco benched Malleta after a poor offensive start. Malleta did not return to the starting lineup for the rest of the tournament, with Héctor Olivera playing first base, second base substitute for that team and also defender of second base on his Santiago de Cuba team. During 2009 he participates in the II World Baseball Classic organized by MLB, where the Cuban team could not advance to the semifinals after being defeated by Japan, the team that would end up winning the tournament. In 2010 Malleta returns again to Cuba's main national team and becomes champion for the second time in the 2010 Intercontinental Cup held in Chinese Taipei.
Malleta officially retires from baseball in the 2023 season.
