Alexandre Arrechea

Contemporary Cuban visual artist. Native of Trinidad in the province of Sancti Spiritus. He graduated from the "Instituto Superior de Arte (ISA)" in Havana in 1994.

He was a member of the group Los Carpinteros for 12 years until July 4, 2003, when he continued his work independently.

His public art involves the concepts of power and its network of hierarchies, surveillance, control, prohibitions and subjugation. The spectator's participation in the work adds to its contemplation. The work arises from human actions and reactions in the face of contemporary versions of the world already described by Jeremy Bentham in the 18th century.

The eye of power watches everything and everyone, and everyone watches everyone else and themselves.

The quality of interdisciplinarity of Alexandre Arrechea reveals a profound interest in exploring both public and domestic spaces. This search has led him to produce several monumental projects such as "Ciudad Transportable" (2000), "The Garden of Mistrust" (2003-2005) and "Perpetual Free Entrance" (2006).

He has exhibited in the most important museums in the United States, as well as in Germany, Spain, South Africa, Mexico, Italy, Brazil, Canada, Finland, Holland, United Kingdom and, of course, Cuba. The most important New York public sculpture award, Sculpture on Park Avenue, will allow him to exhibit 10 of his sculptures in New York starting next February. For five months, the pieces of this artist who was part of the Los Carpinteros collective for 15 years and who has been doing individual work since 2005, will be integrated into the life of the city and can be appreciated by passersby.

The gigantic pieces planned by Arrechea play with 10 iconic buildings in New York. Four workshops, in Brooklyn and in Madrid, are working on their fabrication. "It's a kind of pharaonic project," the artist commented to Cuban Art News.

During the recently held Art Miami fair, Arrechea showed these works at a smaller scale.
