The legendary coach of Cuba's national women's judo team, Ronaldo Veitía, is hospitalized and in serious condition, after suffering a cardiovascular accident about a week ago during his stay in the Spanish province of Alicante. He remains there in an intensive care unit.
The trainer whose curriculum highlights the training of almost all of the main judo champions in women's judo on the Island, spent several days in a coma, assisted by an artificial respirator and unresponsive to stimuli from the doctors treating him.
However, he has achieved an improvement in his health status in recent days, as confirmed on her Facebook wall by one of his most accomplished students, who shared the medical report from the weekend, in which Coach Veitía's awakening from the coma was revealed.
"He just scored an ippon against the devil. He woke up, he's squeezing his hands and little tears of joy are running down his eyes when they play him an audio about the videos we downloaded on purpose about the work he did in judo with his athletes, technical staff and the Cuban people," the message said.
This Tuesday, for her part, the athlete herself let it be known that Veitía was better, with no fever and with more stable blood sugar levels, which is why they expect to remove the intubation if he maintains his condition in the coming 24 or 48 hours.
Ronaldo Veitía is one of the paradigmatic figures of this discipline in the world, awarded both in Cuba and abroad for his numerous achievements. These days, there are no shortage of messages of support that have reached him from the champions he trained, as well as from the Cuban people in general.
