The International Weightlifting Federation ratified by election Cuban weightlifter Marina Rodríguez as a member of the Athletes Commission.
Rodríguez, the first Cuban female weightlifter to win a medal at the Pan American Games, with a silver medal in Toronto 2015, was confirmed in the group of five women and an equal number of men.
Each continent is represented by one woman and one man in the new commission, headed by Ghanaian Forrester Osei, a former athlete who participated in four weightlifting world championships.
Japanese weightlifter Hiromi Miyake, a two-time Olympic and world medalist, was elected vice president.
Rodríguez's election ratifies Cuba's importance in weightlifting, following the International Federation's presidency visit to La Habana last month and the prospects of hosting a Junior World Championship in the country.
