Colonel Eladio Julián Fernández Cívico, director of the state business group GEOCUBA, died on Saturday, September 25 in Havana as a result of Covid-19, according to a statement from the Ministry of the Revolutionary Armed Forces (MINFAR).
Fernández Cívico, who joined the FAR as an active military service soldier in 1969, was distinguished by the regime as a Hero of Labor of the Republic of Cuba.
According to the official statement, he held various responsibilities throughout his career as an officer and was founder of the country's first weapons factory and also of the Communist Party of Cuba (PCC) to whose congresses he attended as a delegate.
He also received the Lázaro Peña Order of the Second Degree and was a deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power.
Fernández Cívico is the thirteenth high-ranking military officer who has died since July 11. From that date onward, obituaries of high-ranking officers made public by official media have been frequent.
On September 16, also a victim of Covid-19, Brigadier General of the Reserve Hiraldo Antonio Mora Orozco died. On September 9, Colonel of the Reserve Eugenio Suárez Pérez, who served as director of the Office of Historical Affairs of the Council of State, passed away, and that same week retired Colonel of the FAR Eduardo Morejón Estévez, a veteran of armed conflicts in Africa and Asia, although in his case the state press did not report the news.
Previously, the death of Brigadier General of the Reserve Arnoldo Ferrer Martínez was announced, who had fought under the command of Fidel Castro in the Sierra Maestra.
