Marcel Hernández is the top foreign scorer in the history of Costa Rican football

Cuban Marcel Hernández is now the top foreign scorer in the history of the first division of Costa Rican football, after scoring a hat-trick in his team's 4-0 victory.

With those three goals, Marcel totals 90 goals in Costa Rican football, surpassing Slovak Josef Miso, who accumulated 88 goals during his active career in this sport in Costa Rica and who for the past 15 years until last night held the top spot among the 10 greatest foreign strikers in the local first division tournaments.

The goal that tied him with Miso was scored by Marcel in the sixth minute of the match against Grecia, after receiving a pass in the penalty area, turning around and striking the ball away from the opposing goalkeeper Antonny Monreal's reach.

The goal that put him ahead and made him the new foreign leader, Marcel scored just five minutes later, at the 11th minute, after receiving a long pass and beating several opponents, including a one-on-one with goalkeeper Monreal, who also could not stop the Cuban striker.

Almost immediately, local sports commentator Christian Sandoval wrote on his personal Twitter profile, @csandovalp, "This is how Cuban history is broken! ?? ????.

But there was more to come and on a gala night, Marcel sent a third goal into the opposing net with a Panenka penalty kick at 66 minutes.

With this, Marcel contributed greatly to Cartaginés maintaining second place in the Clausura Tournament at the start of round 17 and with five matches remaining for the regular phase to conclude and the top four teams to advance to the semifinals.

If the set that won the semifinals was also the winner of the regular season, it will lift the championship cup. Otherwise, the winners of the regular season and the semifinals will face each other in two-legged matchups to determine who takes the trophy to their cabinet.
