High jumper Luis Enrique Zayas won the gold medal at the IV North, Central America and Caribbean Athletics Championship hosted by the Bahamian city of Freeport and became the first champion from the Greater Antilles. During the day, the mixed 4x400 meters relay won the bronze medal.
The world finalist from Oregon reached 2.25 to share the top of the competition with Canadian Django Lovett, both with identical performances in a competition where they were the main favorites.
Zayas started his work cleanly at 2.16 and 2.19, before overcoming on his third attempt a 2.22 that became difficult for both champions. Later he showed signs of recovery and cleared the bar at 2.25 without difficulty, a mark that the Canadian also achieved to go tied at 2.28.
However, at that point neither managed a valid jump and ultimately they shared the top of the podium. In third place finished the local veteran Donald Thomas, also with 2.25 but achieved on his third attempt.
