Lourdes Gurriel Jr. gave a beautiful Sunday afternoon to Blue Jays fans, Cuban baseball fans and baseball fans in general. On September 12, 2021, the Spirituan achieved something that no one had done in 150 years of Major Leagues.
That afternoon the Toronto Blue Jays and the Baltimore Orioles faced off at Oriole Park in front of 8,500 fans. The visitors destroyed rival pitching by scoring 22 runs and connecting 19 hits. The final result was 22×7.
The youngest of the Gurriel brothers batted 3-2 with a pair of home runs, five runs scored and seven RBIs. Also, he received three bases on balls. One of the home runs was the 4th Grand Slam in his personal account so far this season. Thus, he established a record for the most home runs with bases loaded for the franchise and tied the record for Cubans, also held by Alexei Ramírez (2008).
He is the 2nd Blue Jays batter with seven RBIs in 2021 (Vladimir Guerrero Jr.) and the 2nd Cuban (Yasmani Grandal). He is the 1st player in Major League history to get five runs scored, two home runs, seven RBIs and three bases on balls in the same game. No one achieved that much in one game!
The end of season that Lourdes Gurriel Jr. is having is simply spectacular, it's not only that he's batting everything he wants, but he's also producing an enormous amount of runs for his team. Without a doubt we are witnessing the explosion of Yunito that all of us Cuban baseball followers have been waiting for.
