Cuban broadcaster, actor and radio director Jorge Luis Sopo Lorenzana died in the afternoon of December 7, according to an announcement by ACTUAR, Artistic Agency of Performing Arts, which did not specify the cause of death.
"Sopo, as he was known by everyone in the artistic community, was a professional entirely dedicated to radio, a medium that he made his own, like his home. The radio stations Radio Progreso, Radio Taíno and the dramatized productions company Radio Arte received him with open doors thanks to his excellent talent, voice and diction, as well as his ability to direct actors," ACTUAR highlighted.
In the field of performing arts, Sopo Lorenzana worked, among other projects, with the Vilá Proyects Jazz Company, of the Havana Theater Center, in the work "Los Entremeses de Cervantes".
"Many were the plans cut short at the best moment of his life, when he had a promising future ahead of him. Death took him from us, it's true, but in exchange it left us his legacy, his laughter and sense of humor," concluded the Cuban actors agency.
A post by Rioger Guilarte on the aforementioned social network reveals that Jorge Luis Sopo Lorenzana died as a consequence of "kidney failure."
"Like me, Jorge went through a COVID process first and then dengue. I blame myself for not investigating why he was silent when I sent him a congratulatory message for Broadcaster's Day. Now I know. Sopo was dying...escaping all this shit leaving us empty. Wherever you are, my friend. Forgive me...", concluded Guilarte.
The Cuban broadcaster was also bid farewell with "deep sorrow" by the radio station Radio Taíno, a collective he was part of for several years.
"He gave voice to programs such as Oasis de domingo, in which he achieved an unmatched connection with his audience; to the magazine De Mañana and to Éxitos y leyendas", recalled the aforementioned station, which noted that the deceased broadcaster also recorded public service messages, advertising and was part of various magazines and special programming.
In addition to his work at Radio Taíno, Jorge Luis Sopo also collaborated with the radio station Radio Progreso, participated in dramatized programs and was presenter and director of regular programs.
"Dismayed, sad...still unable to believe it. The death of this friend, good friend, intelligent, cultured and one of the gifts that as a valuable human being that he was, life had given me," wrote popular Cuban actor Héctor Noas.
"What an injustice your departure, with everything you had to offer at an age where projects are an illusion on the horizon. I will miss your intelligent conversations so much, almost daily. It was already a ritual. Thank you for what you gave. A hug above all to your mom. Now you are light!", he added.
"Intelligent man, shrewd, lover of perfection, sharp critic -of the bad and the good-. Tireless worker, capable of overcoming all challenges in Radio work, from dramaturgy to the most exalted journalism. One of the indispensable figures of our beloved Radio Progreso station has just departed to eternity. Rest in peace dear colleague and friend Jorge Luis Sopo Lorenzana," wrote Radio Progreso journalist Orlando Ocaña Gómez.
