The actress, singer, presenter and journalist Mariana Ramírez-Corría, who developed an important career in Cuban television, died in Havana this Saturday at the age of 85.
Ramírez-Corría, daughter of Carlos Ramírez Corría, a physician, neurosurgeon and university professor considered the father of Cuban Neurosurgery, and of professor Catalina Garriga, began her work on the small screen at age 15 and participated in memorable programs such as San Nicolás del Peladero, En silencio ha tenido que ser and Su propia guerra.
In San Nicolás del Peladero, a program that set standards in television on the Island, she played the character of Teresita, the daughter of Mayor Plutarco and Mayoress Remigia, a role that won her the affection of the public and demonstrated early on her acting talent and her virtues as a singer.
A graduate in Art History, she was the presenter for several years of the defunct informational program Revista de la mañana and maintained as a journalist and writer a notable career dedicated to gender issues.
"She defended just causes and especially those in favor of women, which is why she became a writer, with an extensive body of work dedicated to feminism. For this reason, since 1982 she wrote with courage about gender issues for the News Agency Service of News for Women of Latin America and the Caribbean (SEMlac)," indicated the Cubaescena portal, which expressed its condolences to family and friends.
For its part, the Cuban television portal noted that with "the passing of Mariana Ramírez-Corría our country loses a multifaceted woman who, throughout her long life, was always consistent with her inexhaustible vocation of service".
