Dr C. Alonso Chil, a paradigm of Cuban medicine, passes away

October 12, 2021

The month of October marks Cuban history with unforgettable events due to their significance. On October 7th, an exemplary man in the sciences said goodbye, a paradigm of medicine, a tireless scientist, of vast culture and with that humility that attempted to disguise his greatness, adding to the pain of human losses.

Internal medicine in Cuba and Latin America is moved by the physical loss of the doctor, teacher, paradigm, indispensable personality in the history of medicine, Dr C. Oscar Berto Alonso Chil. Professor of Merit, Full Professor and Consultant at the University of Medical Sciences of Havana. Specialist of First and Second Degree in Internal Medicine and Past President of the Cuban Society of Internal Medicine SOCUMI.

He was a tireless promoter in the development of Internal Medicine as a specialty and in teaching, an example of altruism and dedication to the training of generations of doctors. With a prodigious historical memory, he recounted every detail of the evolution of the specialty in our country, but it can also be said that there were few moments in the development of Cuban Medicine and medical teaching in which his valuable participation was not present, both in the Cuban Society of Medicine which he directed for several years, in the National Group of the specialty, as well as in the curricula and in the wards of our hospitals.
