Last week, the upcoming retirement of Camagüey-born diver Jeinkler Aguirre from the competitive world was announced, marking the end of a brilliant career of a worthy representative of Agramonte's legacy.
Jeinkler, born on June 14, 1990, rose to the pinnacle of Cuban sports among the nation's best divers.
As a pair with the most decorated of these aquatic athletes in Cuba, Santiago-born José Antonio Guerra, the Camagüey native achieved his most notable accomplishments.
The two, paragons of synchronization, confidence, fighting spirit and composure, won fifth place in the Olympic platform at London 2012 and bronze medals at the Rome 2009 World Championship and the Mexico 2011 World Series, among other awards, in addition to holding top positions in the world rankings.
Unforgettable is the night of July 13, 2015, when they became the first Cuban champions in synchronized diving from the platform at the Pan American Games.
From Toronto, Canada, Jeinkler and José Antonio thrilled Cuba with every dive, defying many predictions and dominating from the beginning of the competition, despite the fierce struggle by others to reach their level in a very high level event on the continent.
Over the years, Jeinkler's career was affected, even interrupted, by injuries, including a delicate herniated disc. Still, he maintained his drive, and among his most recent results stands out the bronze medal at the Calgary Grand Prix, Canada, on April 7, 2019, in mixed synchronized diving from the 10-meter platform with young rising star Anisley García, then 17 years old, a testament to the Agramonte native's perseverance.
After continuing his training at home during the Covid-19 pandemic, he begins his transition away from active sport and will soon join the coaching staff of the national team, a new profession for him, in which he has a wealth of experience and example to offer to young generations, in the path of perpetuating the legacy of stars like Jeinkler Aguirre.
