Cuba conquered three more titles and a second place this Sunday during the final day of the World Cup in sprint canoeing that was held in the Russian city of Barnaul.
On the lake in the Siberian city, the Cuban athletes Yarisleidis Cirilo and Katherin Nuevo in C-2 at 500 meters, Fernando Dayán Jorge (C-1 5000 m) and the latter together with Serguey Torres in (C-2 1000 m) topped the standings on the day, in which José Ramón Pelier won silver in (C-1 500 m).
Cirilo and Nuevo dominated their specialty with a time of two minutes, two seconds and 371 hundredths, to outpace the Uzbek duo of Dilnoza Rakhmatova-Nilufar Zokirova (2:06.259) and the Chilean pair of Karen Roco-María Mailliard (2:06.566).
Likewise, in the C-1 at one thousand meters, the Guantanamo native Cirilo won a silver medal, behind Chilean Mailliard (25:58.491) while German Annika Loske took the bronze… Here, Katherin placed fourth.
Jorge, for his part, covered the five thousand meters of the C-1 in 22 minutes, 52 seconds and 97 hundredths, enough to outpace Mexican Rigoberto Camilo (22:52.664) and Italian Carlo Tacchini (23:13.637), who finished in second and third place.
Here fellow Cuban Serguey Torres finished fourth with a time of 23:59.103.
Precisely Torres, together with Jorge, prevailed in the C-2 at one thousand meters, stopping the clocks at three minutes, 43 seconds and 167 hundredths.
Behind the Cuban two-person canoe were those from Germany (3:45.895) and Russia (3:46.695), silver and bronze, respectively.
Finally, young Pelier, in the C-1 at 500 meters clocked 1:52.377 minutes to trail Moldovan Serghei Rarnovschi, who posted 1:51.535.
Third place went to Italian Tacchini, who needed 1:53.109 minutes to finish the race.
After these results, Cuba totaled five gold medals and two silvers, with their athletes certifying that at the Tokyo Olympics this summer, they will have to be considered among the contenders to reach the podium in each of their specialties.
