He began in theater at fifteen years old as an amateur actor and at seventeen was already studying at the Instituto Superior de Arte de La Habana, where he graduated as a Bachelor of Performing Arts in 1988. He became known internationally in 1994 following the international success of the film "Fresa y chocolate", which included an Oscar nomination in 1995.
He has an extensive professional career not only in film, but also in theater and television.
Since 2005 he has also worked in screenwriting and in the generation and management of various audiovisual projects, being part of the multicultural team CayArte www.cayarte.com, based in Rome.
His work as a screenwriter began in 2005. His first screenplay was Civilizados, a short film shot that same year in which he also acts.
This short had a significant international trajectory participating in important festivals such as the Internacional de Huesca, in Spain, or the Laliff (Los Angeles Latino International Film Festival)
In 2008 he made the short ¿Soy yo acaso el guardián de mi hermano? with his own screenplay and which he also produced, starred in and directed.
In 2009 he just completed the feature film Afinidades, his first feature screenplay brought to the screen, which he has also co-directed and starred in.
At this time he has ready his second feature fiction as a screenwriter: Concrete, written jointly with Italian director Pietro Jona and which will soon be directed by him.
Theater
This is the medium in which he has developed a more extensive trajectory. After studying Performing Arts for five years at the Instituto Superior de Arte de la Habana, and after taking courses and workshops with important contemporary theater pedagogues, such as Antunes Filho or Eugenio Barba, theater has led him to act on stages in multiple countries and to confront directly with audiences from several continents. He considers theater his school and his natural medium, which is why he has never abandoned the stage.
He has received important awards such as the Ágora at the Festival de Teatro Clásico de Almagro for his interpretation of Oberon in A Midsummer Night's Dream, by Shakespeare.
