Omar Alí Pérez

Cuban actor of theater, television and film with extensive artistic career. Television Director. He is remembered with great affection for his character Edgardo from the Cuban Telenovela ¡Oh, La Habana! which in 2006 received the Caricato Award for Best Male Performance.

He was born in Candelaria, Pinar del Río. He graduated from the National School of Dramatic Arts in 1982, and then joined the cast of the "Teatro Estudio" group, under the direction of Raquel Revuelta, until 1999.

Parallel to his theatrical work, he performed in various series, telenovelas, single-theme programs on Cuban television and films in cinema. In these 30 years of artistic life, he has worked under the direction of some of the most important directors of Cuban theater, television, and film; such as: Raquel Revuelta, Vicente Revuelta, Berta Martínez, Abelardo Estorino, Héctor Quintero, Abel Ponce, Jesús Cabrera, Charlie Medina, Magda González Grau, Carlos Piñeiro, Erick Kaupp, Humberto Solás, among others.

In Television, he has been part of award-winning projects in the spaces of telenovelas, series, adventures, tele-theaters, tales and teleplay.

For his performance in theater, he received in 1993 a Special Mention of the Covarrubias award for his interpretation in the work "Concierto Barroco", he also received Special Mention of the Caricato award in 1994 for his performance in the Day and Night Series: "Al Filo de la Ley" and in 2006 he received the Caricato Award for Best Male Performance for the Telenovela: "Oh la Habana" with the character of Edgardo.

In 1991 he traveled to the Soviet Union as part of the cast of the film "El Siglo de las Luces" directed by Humberto Solás; in 1992 to the Theater Festival of Cádiz with the work "Concierto Barroco", which was dedicated to the 500 years of the discovery of America; in 1998 in the United States of America he participated with the work "Fresa y Chocolate" presented at the "Teatro Repertorio Español" in New York, with great public and critical success; in 1999 he traveled to Canada for the staging and performances of the work "La ira de Ernesto y Ernestina" as part of a cultural exchange with that country, work that culminated with two presentations at the International Theater Festival of Havana, that same year. He returned to Spain in 2001 with the work: "Feliz Cumpleaños"

From 2005 to 2006 he completed a Diploma in Television Direction at the Center for Studies and Training of Radio and Television, becoming qualified as a television director and as an adjunct professor at that center.

Despite being much better known for his work in Cuban Television, Omar lives proud of his work in theater and the characters he has played there. He feels great satisfaction for having worked with Héctor Quintero in those popular works of Héctor such as "Contigo pan y cebolla" (where he first played Anselmito and later El Vendedor), "Te sigo esperando", "Esperando el lunes" and "El lugar ideal". Equally important was his participation in works, significant in the history of theater, that he performed with Vicente Revuelta and Raquel Revuelta.

Confessions of Omar Alí

Omar is, besides an outstanding actor, a director of dramatizations on Cuban Television.
Villain Roles: I enjoy any role, but indisputably the villain roles written for television are more attractive because of their complexity. I enjoy very much interpreting emotions and the more complex and profound they are, the better. I adore villains!, They make me feel like a better actor.
¡Oh, La Habana!: Excellent. My greatest success in a long time, perhaps of my entire television career. However, I consider its greatest virtue is the themes it has addressed.
Influence of Iris, his wife: She has influence in everything I do in my life, there is not a step where I do not lean on her. My greatest critic and my best admirer.
Character he would like to play: Othello. Will I have time left?
A truth never told: The word ¡Action! terrifies me!
Paula and Jorge Alí: Paula is an example. She is one of those hardworking actresses. She has earned a space and let no one think it came easily; it has been with much sacrifice and proving herself. Seeing her in the theater, how she performs and the energy she transmits, is impressive. "Jorge is a very versatile actor. He has been very fortunate and has shown that he is talented—because in this career it is not all about having talent, opportunities to demonstrate it are also important—. He has histrionic ability and a solid career, although he has had low moments, like everyone else, but he has known how to maintain his professional status.
Poorly written characters or bad acting: There is a very commonly used phrase, whose author I do not remember, and it says: "There are no small characters, only small actors". I think the statement referred at that time to the actor in the world of theater. In that time you did not play stupid or foolish characters, or ones that were superfluous to the story. Currently not always in those scripts, and even in theater ones, do you find good characters, but there are more of them.
His international acting archetype: Anthony Hopkins.
