Narrator, poet, critic, editor and journalist from Villa Clara. Member of the UNEAC, (National Union of Writers and Artists of Cuba). He has obtained multiple awards and recognitions for his outstanding work as a writer.
In 1988 he won the National Prize for Literary Workshops. In 1990 he obtained the Luis Rogelio Nogueras Prize in the short story genre with the book «Los equivocados». He also received Honorable Mention in the "Poesía de Amor" Contest in Varadero in 1993.
He obtained the short story prize from Revolución y Cultura Magazine in 1994. In 1995 he deserved the Pinos Nuevos Prize. In the years 1998 and 1999 he obtains Honorable Mention in the "América Bobia" poetry contest and UNEAC Prize for short story with «Buenos días, Zenón» respectively.
He was First Honorable Mention in the short story contest of La Gaceta de Cuba in 2000 and Honorable Mention in the Casa de las Américas Prize in 2001, as well as UNEAC short story Prize 2001, with «Otras versiones del miedo». In 2008 he obtained the Italo Calvino Novel Prize for his book «Bailar el último cuplé».
He was born in Placetas, Villa Clara. He is part of the editorial board of the electronic magazine La Jiribilla, as well as El Caimán Barbudo and La Letra del Escriba.
Frequent contributor to various Cuban and foreign publications, his short stories and poems have been published, furthermore, in Mexico, Puerto Rico, Argentina and other countries. He maintains a weekly column of literary criticism in the Periódico Granma.
He has personally edited books by National Literature Prize winners and other writers of national and international renown such as Carilda Oliver, Daniel Chavarría, Guillermo Vidal, Pedro de Oraá, Pedro Juan Gutiérrez and others.
The Council of State of the Republic of Cuba granted him in 1996 the Order "Abel Santamaría" for his outstanding work in cultural promotion in the Cienfuegos community of Castillo de Jagua. He also possesses the Distinction for National Culture. He directs the Editora Nacional Letras Cubanas.
