Iroel Sánchez Espinosa

He was born in the city of Santa Clara, and is a graduate in Computer Engineering from the Technological University of Havana (CUJAE).

He has been director of Casa Editora Abril and president of the Cuban Institute of the Book. From 2000 to 2009 he presided over the Organizing Committee of the International Book Fair of Havana.

Founder of the cultural magazine La Jiribilla.

He created and coordinates the development of the Cuban Collaborative Encyclopedia EcuRed.

He edits the blog La Pupila Insomne, among the most read in Cuba.

Member of the Union of Journalists of Cuba. He has been part of the International Committee of the World Bloggers Meeting and the Editorial Board of the technology magazine Giga.

He has given lectures at universities in Cuba, Spain, Brazil, Venezuela and participated as a speaker at international events related to communication and computer science in Latin America and Europe.

He regularly collaborates with the international television channels TeleSur, Al Mayadeen and Russia Today.

He directs the Television program La Pupila Asombrada.

Publications
His texts have been published in the magazines Casa de las Américas, Temas, on the websites Cubadebate, Rebelión and in the newspapers Juventud Rebelde, Granma and Trabajadores.

Author of the book "Sospechas y disidencias. Una mirada cubana en la red." (Suspicions and Dissidences. A Cuban Perspective on the Net), a selection of articles from his blog with which he criticizes the coverage that major media outlets provide about Cuba.
He works in the Office for the Computerization of Cuban Society.

Recognition
He was part of the Cuban internationalist contingent that defeated South African troops in Southern Angola. For his participation there he was decorated with the medals:

"Distinguished Service of the FAR"
Félix Elmuza Distinction awarded by the Union of Journalists of Cuba.
