He lives and works in Havana.
Civil Engineer graduate in 1981 from the Instituto Superior Politecnico José A. Hecheverría in Havana. His involvement with cinema began in 1988 at the Instituto Cubano del Arte e Industria Cinematográficos (ICAIC), as senior specialist and organizer of Cuban and Latin American film screenings for Europe and North America.
President of the International Festival of New Latin American Cinema in Havana since May 2013, he was previously its director between 1994 and 2010; audiovisual programming director of the Instituto Buñuel and director of the Sala Berlanga (Madrid) between 2008 and 2012, a period during which he was a guest professor in the Film Management Master's program at Universidad Carlos III de Madrid.
Director for the Americas of the Dictionary of Iberoamerican Cinema (Spain, Portugal, America).
He is one of the authors of the book Common Stories 40 years/50 films of Iberoamerican cinema, presented at the 1st Iberoamerican Film Congress held in Mexico D.F. in 2008.
He has participated as a jury member at film festivals in Cartagena de Indias, Colombia (1994); Festival International de Films de Femmes de Créteil, France (1996); International Film Festival Donostia-San Sebastián, Spain (1998), -New Directors Section-; Sarajevo Film Festival, Bosnia (2001); It's all True Festival in Sao Paulo, Brazil (2001); The Providence Festival of New Latin American Cinema, USA (2002); Mexican Film Showcase in Guadalajara, Mexico (2002); Dominican Republic Film Festival (2004); Málaga Film Festival, Spain (2006); International Film Festival Guadalajara, Mexico (2006); Lima Film Festival, Peru (2006); International Film Festival of Monterrey, Mexico (2007); Documentamadrid (2008); Latin American Cinema Encounters of Toulouse (2010); Granada Festival. Cinemas of the South (2011).
He has served as an advisor to the presidency of the Instituto Cubano del Arte y la Industria Cinematográfica (ICAIC) and has participated as jury member in numerous film festivals.
Iván Giroud has held the general direction of Havana's most important film event since the death of its founder, filmmaker Alfredo Guevara in 2013.
He currently directs the magazine Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano and has published several books including the compilation Alfredo Guevara. In the Exercise of Criticism and recently The Pretext of Memory, a history of the Havana Film Festival which last December celebrated its 40th edition.
