Rodrigo Álvarez Cambra

El Profe, Kiko

Died: March 2, 2023

He was born in Candelaria, a city in Pinar del Río, Cuba. In his childhood years, it is said that his first inclination was toward construction engineering and that an unfortunate family event influenced his decision: "My father's illness is what made me change my mind. It was a shock to see him die without being able to do anything. This made him think that he should be a doctor and try to solve some of humanity's problems. With this motivation from the time he began his schooling, he set out toward achieving his goals.

In 1952 he entered the University of Havana, he liked cardiovascular surgery, but during his time as a student he noticed that he felt good around stretchers, where casts were placed on the injured and he began to help those who applied casts. And they say that those who get wet with plaster become orthopedic surgeons. And so it was.

He came to Cuban orthopedics this way, which was very deficient, practically primitive. That is why from the time he graduated he had the dream of creating a center to eradicate those ailments. He then worked in the Calixto García and Fructuoso Rodríguez hospitals and completed medical missions in Africa. Upon returning he was sent to France for two years to specialize and begin this gigantic work that is today the Frank País Orthopedic Hospital.

In January 1969 he assumed the direction of the Frank País National Orthopedic Hospital, which began in a small hospital with 30 beds for the rehabilitation of invalids, with six doctors, it was the old ONRI and with government support, together with a team that formed over the years and hard work, has achieved the largest center, the most comprehensive and with the most complete infrastructure in the world.

With this it can be assured that he initiated a new cycle in his professional life. He contributed to the creation of the Cuban School of Orthopedics, where infrastructure was created for research, there was experimental development, techniques were produced to initiate new experiences.

The eminent scientist is considered the greatest promoter of orthopedics and traumatology in Cuba, founder of the current international scientific complex ORTOP Frank País, a center of continental reference that brings together a high specialized potential. Among dozens of recognitions, the Cuban academic possesses the Carlos J. Finlay Order and the Frank País Order as well as the status of Hero of Work of the Republic of Cuba, at the international level he has become worthy, among others, of the Olympic Collar of the IOC and the Official Order of the Legion of Honor of France.

He is the director of the ORTOP Scientific Complex, head of the National Group of Orthopedics and Traumatology, and president of the Cuban society of this medical specialty. The development, successes and international recognition of Cuban orthopedics has a promoter, a creator, Professor Rodrigo Álvarez Cambras, specialist surgeon of the second degree and full professor of the subject of Orthopedics and Traumatology, with more than 30 years dedicated to this specialty and with dozens of orders, medals and recognitions from Cuban and foreign institutions for his relevant scientific contributions. He has been a Deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power since 1996.

The most important achievement is to have an orthopedic hospital like this, and also the RALCA, which was the first external fixator achieved in the West, with patents in 30 countries and introduced in 42 nations that promoted orthopedics in world medicine. In Cuba it has been used in 245,000 patients and does not age. There are other therapeutic techniques for injuries to muscles and ligaments of the ankle, knee and insertion injuries, calcification and others disseminated throughout the world. Without a doubt, surgery on paralytics, in spinal cord revascularization, achieved in recent years and others, are contributions that demonstrate the quality and experience of Cuban orthopedic surgeons and their health system.

Currently there is massive manufacture of osteosynthesis systems, hip plates, different orthopedic devices, for the country and export. All this gave rise to the current Ibero-American School of Orthopedics and Traumatology, where the RALCA Fixators emerge and develop, which have given prestige to the institution. The professor being the main one of the project.

He completed a first internationalist mission in the mid-1960s in Africa, as a fighter and doctor. Other professional missions placed him in Peru, Chile, Iraq.

The prestigious Cuban orthopedic surgeon has been requested by heads of foreign states for the improvement of orthopedic technique and the rehabilitation process, becoming an artisan, an excellent craftsman.

Moreover, he is also not unfamiliar with the conditions for "traditional art": Álvarez Cambras is a lover of painting and likes to take up brushes to reflect with them his other self and give gifts to friends.

Very notable has been the presence of Dr. Álvarez Cambras in the care of injuries to high-performance athletes. Such is his contribution in this regard that he has been designated Honorary Member of the Cuban Federation of Sports Medicine and holds the Olympic Order, conferred by Juan Antonio Samaranch, president of the International Olympic Committee.

In 1987 he received the Palmes Académiques Order, awarded to personalities of science and culture in France and other nations, and in January 1995 French President Francois Mitterand decorated him with the Legion of Honor. In Cuba he was awarded the Carlos J. Finlay Order, in addition to receiving the honorific title of National Hero of Work and is Full Professor of the Institute of Higher Medical Sciences of Havana.

Deputy to the National Assembly of People's Power, Álvarez Cambras is known for his public interventions and before the cameras when it comes to presenting authorized opinions or disseminating criteria of national interest, since the affairs of the country's life are also among the duties that occupy him.
