Onel Lázaro Hernández Mayea

Onel is a Cuban footballer naturalized as German. He plays as a midfielder and his team is Norwich City in the EFL Championship.

On October 27, 2019, in matchday 10 of the Premier League, he scored his first goal in that competition against Manchester United, and became the first Cuban to score in the entire history of the top English competition.2​

He was born in Morón, Ciego de Ávila and migrated to Gütersloh, Germany, with his mother and sister at the age of six. He played in the academies of TuS Westfalia Neuenkirchen, FC Gütersloh 2000, Rot Weiss Ahlen, and Arminia Bielefeld.3​

He made his professional debut with Arminia Bielefeld in the Bundesliga on October 1, 2010 against SC Paderborn 07. After two years at the club, he signed for SV Werder Bremen II, and on January 10, 2014 Hernández was transferred to VfL Wolfsburg II.

On June 2 he joined Eintracht Brunswick of the 2. Bundesliga for the 2016-17 season.

He arrived at Norwich City of the EFL Championship in January 2018.​ After achieving promotion to the Premier League, in June 2019 he renewed his contract until June 2023,​ when his club debuted in the Premier League, he became the first Cuban to play at the highest level of English football.

At the end of August 2021 he was loaned out to Middlesbrough F. C. for the entire season.10​ However, the loan was cancelled in January so he could complete the campaign, also on loan, at Birmingham City F. C.

Hernández has represented Germany in the under-18 category in a match against Ukraine in 2010.

In an interview in September 2017, the player commented on his willingness to play for Cuba, saying: "If they call me, I'm going to Cuba".

In November 2018 he was called up for the first time by the Cuban national team,​ although he did not make his debut until March 24, 2021 in a qualifying match for the 2022 World Cup against Guatemala despite having arrived at the stadium after the match had already started due to flight problems.​ His first goal with the national team came on March 29, 2021 against Curaçao, although they ended up losing the match 1-2, in the World Cup qualifier.
