Nilda Collado Díaz

Died: February 19, 2020

Nilda was a dancer, commercial model, actress, and dubbing director for Cuban television.

Before becoming an actress, she received training from age 6 in other artistic disciplines, studying piano, singing, and later ballet. She had the privilege of studying with teachers who are historical names in Cuban culture such as Elena del Cueto, the Alonsos, the great Blanquita Becerra, which served her in her professional life, allowing her to develop with greater breadth in the roles she would later perform.

In 1957 she began in Cuban television, specifically on CMQ TV, as the main model for Regalías "El cuño", a prestigious Cuban cigar brand.

In 1958, she hosted a television program on the then Telemundo channel, called "Modas y Modelos", and this is when she began to discover acting. Her first television novel was "Indio", and from this opportunity she continued throughout her life. In 1958 she was declared Miss Perfección.
Miami would be her next work destination as a model for other commercial brands. She was a principal dancer in various shows at the cabarets Tropicana, Sans Soucic, Habana Riviera, Capri, among others.

Her acting career began in 1960 doing cinema, radio and television in various programs of these media, until she began the difficult career as a clown. She was the character she played as a partner with Erdwin Fernández, the clown Trompoloco until Erdwin's death in 1997. Nilde has stated that: "I was fortunate to have by my side a magnificent man, who was my teacher, my boyfriend, my lover, my partner, and the father of my children. We made independent careers, I was very aware that he was the star, because of his knowledge and trajectory. Edwin never allowed me to work with him, because he said we had to have different paths, so that they wouldn't associate my future professional achievements with being the wife of Edwin Fernández, even the times we did some performances together on Radio, I played the smallest role. I have the great fortune of being the wife of a personality of acting in Cuba, who did not make his career by taking advantage of this condition, which I also instilled in my children who have continued the same path".

With Roberto Garriga, the director, she was earning the right to roles of greater category. Also Carlos Piñero directed her in important pieces such as Othello. In the adventure spaces she worked under the direction of Erick Caos.

She served as artistic director and dubbing director for television, as well as remained active as an actress. In 2008, the then director of the tent, Lidia Bécquer and the national circus specialist from the National Council of Performing Arts, Gladys Alvarado, show Nilda the idea of holding an annual clown competition that would bear the name in remembrance of Trompoloco, and that from then on would have the namesake tent as its venue.

In 2011, this project is consolidated and presents the participation of 16 clowns from 4 countries plus Cuba, which makes it an event with international presence.

Nilda married Erdwin Fernández and they had a son who is currently an actor on Cuban television, Erdwin José Fernández Collazo.
