The Cuban López played for the Brazilian club Sada Cruzeiro in 2020/21. Last season he defended UPCN, from Argentina, when it was champion of the Argentine Cup 2019 and runner-up of South America 2020, where he was chosen as one of the best outside attackers. In Argentina, López also played for Gigantes del Sur for two seasons.
Miguel López is one of the most promising athletes of the Cuban national team. He has been in the youth categories since 2015, being a U-21 world champion and U-23 bronze medalist in 2017. He was at the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016. López was champion of the Pan American Cup and the NORCECA Cup in 2019, as well as runner-up of the Pan American Games that same year.
At age 10 he began practicing volleyball, although, according to an interview given in 2017, he "had a hard time" due to his small stature.
Coming from the U-21 squad — silver medal in the World Championship of his category — he unexpectedly rose to the national team due to a sexual scandal that compromised much of the Cuban main team in Finland shortly before the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games.
He was part of the Cuban squad that won the bronze medal at the Pan American Volleyball Cup in 2017. In June 2019 he would repeat on the national team, this time to win the tournament held in the Mexican city of Colima.
Miguel Ángel Castro has reached stellar levels in volleyball despite his relatively low height (1.92 m) due to his great jumping ability.
