She won three medals at the Pan American Judo Championship between 2013 and 2016.

On Sunday, January 21, Maricet died suddenly. Although she was no longer active, she achieved an important career while she was part of Cuba's national women's judo team.

Victim of a heart attack, Maricet Espinosa died at age 34.

La Mole, as Maricet was known, lived outside of Cuba and had undergone several cosmetic surgeries, which influenced the fatal outcome, according to the Cubalite portal.

The judoka was Pan American champion on two occasions (Costa Rica 2013 and Ecuador 2014), runner-up in Havana 2016, and competed at the Rio-2016 Olympic Games, always in the 63 kg category.

In 2016 in Havana, she won second place, where she achieved her third medal in these continental competitions. Maricet Espinosa also won the Pan American opens in Lima and Buenos Aires in 2016. In Grand Prix she obtained one silver and three bronze medals.

She also participated in the Rio de Janeiro Olympic Games in 2016 and lost in her first match. Her last competition was the 2017 Pan American championship, a competition in which she achieved fifth place in her division.

Throughout her career she obtained a total of 12 medals in all the events in which she participated.

"La mole," as she was known, born in Arroyo Naranjo in 1990, was a winner on several occasions of the national judo championships in Cuba.
