Marcelino Ríos Torres

The distinguished Dr. Marcelino Ríos Torres, who among other responsibilities served for 27 years as director of the Instituto Cubano de Oftalmología "Ramón Pando Ferrer".

With outstanding work in academic, scientific and healthcare areas in the National Health System. He held different management positions in hospitals and specialized centers in Villa Clara, Matanzas and La Habana.

Throughout his professional career he achieved the highest categories: Specialist of First and Second Degree in Ophthalmology, Diploma in Public Administration, Doctor in Medical Sciences and full professor and researcher of the Universidad de Ciencias Médicas de La Habana.

He was one of the main promoters of the "Operación Milagro" program, which restored vision to thousands of people from many parts of the world. Throughout his life he received important recognitions and distinctions.

He belonged to multiple national and international scientific societies and organizations. He was President of the Sociedad Cubana de Oftalmología. As part of his academic activity he provided scientific advice in several institutions in Cuba and in other countries of the Region, taught numerous courses and conducted high-impact research. He published more than 100 articles and participated in numerous national and international scientific events.
