Lena Burke
Lena Burke, also known as Lena Pérez, is a Cuban pianist, composer, and performer.
Lena is the daughter of the renowned Cuban singer Malena Burke, and granddaughter of Elena Burke "La Señora Sentimiento".
The piano is her life, the one that has always accompanied her. A perfect day for LENA is described as ... waking up with the idea of a new song turning around in my mind and sitting at the piano to develop it without stopping until I finish composing it entirely.
From an early age LENA knew that a torrent of musical notes flowed through her veins guiding her. Her first songs were recorded at age 3, followed by guitar lessons at age 5 from her father, Rey Nerio (music producer), and classical piano lessons at age 7.
After twelve years of study, LENA became a concert pianist, winning several awards and discovering a hidden treasure, her voice.
Lena Burke left Cuba in 1993, at age 17, for Canada. She spent eight months there and then moved to Venezuela, where her mother already lived.
Graduated in classical piano, during her years in Venezuela she began to venture into the genres of boleros, guarachas, and danzones, playing piano for Malena Burke. Later both settled in the United States.
LENA has a vocal range and a truly privileged vocal range, difficult to find in a world where technology has replaced the true talent of an artist. Her name has been part of an intimate circle in the music industry, participating in the choirs of some of the most important productions to date, from Plácido Domingo to Chayanne, Alejandro Sanz, Jennifer López, Gloria Estefan, Julio Iglesias, and many others.
From a corner in her home in Miami, where she has lived for almost a decade, her piano takes her to remote places filled with emotions, love, forgiveness, longing, and hope. Through her hands and heart flow songs that, transferred to a score, would be the paths to a new stage in her life, that of interpreter of a solo album which she would simply name LENA.
The architect for this to happen was Alejandro Sanz, who after meeting her during the recording of his album No es lo Mismo, took a special interest in the singer's musical career and introduced her to Warner Music Latina. "Lena told me that my music had been a source of inspiration for her since she was little (which didn't sit well with me as you can understand). Lena sat at the piano and began to sing some of her compositions and I thought: 'Since she was little?.....already!.... This woman has never been little'...And then I felt that anxiety I have felt on other occasions...the eagerness to discover to others what I had discovered that night in that studio", declares Alejandro.
Everything changed from that fortunate day and after weeks in a studio in Milan, LENA gives birth to an album with its own personality, with Caribbean rhythm and classical vestiges of a faithful piano. Her self-titled album, produced by Emanuele Rufinengo (Alejandro Sanz, Ketama, among others), contains 12 songs that capture different moments in the singer-songwriter's life.
She performed with Cuban singer Kiki Corona her song "Es la hora de gritar Revolución" in support of the Cuban government. She has participated in the choirs of numerous artists, from Plácido Domingo to Jennifer López or Alejandro Sanz. The latter discovered her compositions and bet on the young Cuban.
Lena Burke launches her solo career (Warner Music) with 12 songs, composed by her, including 'Tu corazón', a duet with her beloved Sanz.
In 2010 Lena, in the company of Colombian Jorge Villamizar and Spanish Álex Ubago, form a temporary group which would achieve great success that same year after launching their first album Alex, Jorge y Lena in September, also presenting their first single "Estar contigo", which became number 1 in Argentina and was in the TOP 10 in Mexico. The project of working together is only parallel to their solo careers and when they finish the tour they will record separately.
