Ismercy Salomón

Recognized Cuban actress who has a serious and admirable career in Cuban theater.

Ismercy is a graduate of the Faculty of Performing Arts at the Instituto Superior de Arte and has in her artistic portfolio a fruitful and deeply-rooted dedication to Cuban theater, as it is what truly fulfills her as an actress and makes her happiest.

Her first professional steps were at Argos Teatro, directed by maestro Carlos Celdrán, who assigned her the interpretation of complex characters, such as Luz Marina in Aire Frío and Elena in Uncle Vanya.

As part of the cast of the Theater Group El Público, directed by Carlos Díaz, she assumed the leading role in the work The Respectful Prostitute by Jean Paul Sartre (1905-1980), a difficult role that forced her to rid herself of all prejudice to perform this challenging part, for which she was awarded the Adolfo Llauradó Prize in the category of best female performance.

She has participated in other works by the same theater group such as Caligula, where she appears as Caesonia, and also in the German theater week where Drops of Water on Hot Stones was premiered in the Adolfo Llauradó Hall, the first text by Rainer W. Fassbinder.

She worked in 2009 on the teleplay Los heraldos negros, by filmmaker Charlie Medina, on the teletheatre The Strongest, by filmmaker Tomás Piard, as well as on the teleplay Theorem, by filmmaker Mariela López.

She participated in the films Long Distance, where she played the role of the shop assistant, and in Penumbras, where she plays the leading character Tati. Penumbras is a recent Cuban film with a certain intention of documentary, almost anthropological perspective, of the country during the Special Period, but it does not cease to have deep roots in the profound Cuba of 2012.

The actress Ismercy Salomón feels truly rewarded in theater.

Vocation for Acting - To answer that question I must look back in time and space, to my days as a student at the Instituto Preuniversitario Vocacional de Ciencias Exactas, where I was part of an amateur theater group. And in that environment of artistic excellence, the flame was ignited that—as you rightly say—sparked the fire that led me from the field of exact sciences to the capital's Universidad de las Artes, where I had the privilege of studying under mentors of the caliber of Orestes Pérez and Carlos Celdrán, and after completing my academic formation, I obtained my degree in the Faculty of Performing Arts. In other words, the mark that this enriching experience left on my intellect and spirit still continues to define my trajectory as an actress.

Nudity - My revered maestro affirms that "nudity is another way of dressing the body," and I agree with that controversial criterion sustained by Carlos Díaz…. as long as it is justified from an aesthetic-artistic perspective; and of course, the development of the plot demands or requires it….. In few words, for me nudity is no impediment whatsoever to accepting a good proposition formulated by a theatrical, television or cinematographic director. However, nudity for the mere pleasure of nudity will not and does not form part of my ethical principles.

Theater - In theater is where I truly fulfill myself as an actress, because it is there where I receive the reward that most satisfies me from every point of view. In that medium, the actor or actress lives, dies and is resurrected in the same afternoon or night... and receives the award immediately: the sincere applause of the "respectable"; that is a caress that vivifies your artistic self.

Advice to the Young - Work, study and dedicate yourself body, mind and soul to our profession, to be a better actor or actress each day, and at the same time, a better human being, because the two things go inextricably linked.
