El Dany, Sensei
Died: July 18, 2020
One of the members and performer who managed to place the work of the duo Yomil and El Dany, which they classified as "traptón," in the stellar levels of popularity in Cuba.
He studied medicine before joining Roberto Hidalgo Puentes, alias Yomil, to bring DpuntoD to life, a group that was active until 2011 but reunited in 2015 under the new name Yomil and El Dany, adopting this time the "traptón" school, which supposedly combines accelerated reggaeton with more rhythmic trap.
Thus this singer began in the periphery of Cuban music until positioning himself in the top ranks alongside Yomil, with whom he created one of the most solid groups in urban music on the Island.
The duo founded their own company, Trapton Music Inc., with which they promoted young exponents of various currents of the urban music genre. Their music was silenced in the early days in local media, but later began to be promoted in different spaces.
In reality, the Yomil and El Dany group was extremely popular on the island, which has awakened heartfelt expressions of sadness from various artists from the same country, who have acknowledged how difficult it was to impose this school due to the official rejection they received.
The album "Sobredosis," which was the second in the duo's career, reached first place in Google Play sales in the Top Latin Music Albums during 2016, and their most well-known musical theme, "Tengo," ranked eighth in the Worldwide Albums Top of the same application.
Local critics have also highlighted that the duo did not limit itself to adopting foreign influences, but introduced elements of Cuban musical tradition in their creations. The duo collaborated with several prominent musicians on the national scene, both within reggaeton and rap or popular music, and was considered one of the main references of the urban scene in Cuba.
El Dany died from acute cardiovascular complications at Calixto García Hospital in Havana, at the age of 31, and leaves behind two children.
Journalist Michel Hernández stated: "This performer emerged from popular neighborhoods to impose a musical style that, although it was criticized and censored in its beginnings, gained enormous popularity among a broad segment of Cuban society, especially among young people." The duo of Yomil and Dany was very prolific discographically and exerted an important influence on urban music and on the other groups of this scene that have been emerging in Cuba.
Dany was author and performer on the group's six record productions, received a nomination in 2017 for the Billboard Award in the Latin Rhythm Albums Artist of the Year, duo or group category.
The recorded albums are: Son muchas cosas, Play to Going, Dopados de la mente, Ambidiestros, Mug, Doping with the record companies: Urban Latin Records, City Record.
