Anabel López Domínguez

Anabell

One of the essential and prestigious voices of our country who has established a solid career as a performer, composer, and producer. Half-sister of singer-songwriter Silvio Rodríguez.

In 1982 she won the First Prize for Performance in the Adolfo Guzmán Contest, the most important music competition on Cuban radio and television.

She studied classical guitar and complementary piano at the Alejandro García Caturla Conservatory, and performing arts at the National School of Dramatic Arts.

In 1979 she made her debut on the Cuban television program Te doy una canción. Her musicality, impeccable intonation, clear diction, excellent vocal qualities, and the depth of her performances placed her in the forefront as an interpreter of Cuban song from the very beginning.

In 1980 she joined the New Trova Movement, from where she had a meteoric career. She was part of the Cuban delegation to the Varadero'82 International Song Festival performing her version of Unicornio, a classic by her brother Silvio Rodríguez, and her highly acclaimed performance there marked the decisive step into professional life.

All of this is complemented by her command of the stage and her natural aptitude and talent for venturing into almost all currents of Cuban song, such as traditional trovadorism, bolero, tango, rock, ballad, nueva trova, and new currents of pop and fusion.

All of them performed throughout her career in her distinctive style.

She won First Prize in the Adolfo Guzmán Cuban Music Contest performing Este Canto de amor, by Juan Antonio Leyva, the most important event organized by the Cuban Institute of Radio and Television (ICRT).

From that moment on, her voice and talent place her among the top names in Cuban song, considered one of the most transcendent voices of her generation. Her vocal possibilities and natural aptitude for all musical currents allow her to venture into the most diverse genres. She has received countless national and international awards and various recognitions.

Reviews
Critics have expressed themselves about Anabell López as follows:
"It was a magical night, the atmosphere created by Anabell López at the Taberna de Barranco with her sweet and warm voice, her stage presence and that energy she projects. She gave us a repertoire where we could hear the most beautiful stories of love and heartbreak." (Gestión, Lima, Peru).

"The young performer Anabell, owner of the most deliciously clear voice one can imagine, gave a wonderful display of her artistic quality." (Dagne Nyheter, Sweden).

"The small figure of the beautiful young Anabell López rose on the great stage of Sopot'83 with the First Prize for Performance. With her stage presence and her sweet and powerful voice she captivated the jury and the audience. A good Cuban showing at this festival." (Tribuna Ludu, Poland).

"The presentations by the Cuban artistic delegation leave in their wake an excellent reception from the Mexican public, who always receive Cuban artists with pleasure. In this cast, the presence of young singer Anabell López stands out, who has surprised the audience with the magic of her presence, her impeccable voice, and a select repertoire where at the request of the audience she has had to repeat again and again. Congratulations Anabell." (Uno Más Uno, Mexico).

"We must thank the organizers of this Festival for the presence of Cuban singer Anabell López, who has left no doubt that the new generation of Cuban musicians and singers have talent to spare. Anabell's stage entrances have been apotheotic. Her perfect intonation and the beautiful nuances of her voice enchant even the most resistant ear." (Barricada, Managua, Nicaragua).

"Anabell López, from Cuba, was undoubtedly a great success at this Latin music festival, showing her total command of the stage and a voice that immediately captivates those who hear it. Her performance ended with the entire theater on its feet singing in chorus the final of the last song Gota de rocío, by Silvio Rodríguez, which is why she was labeled by the press as the sensation of this festival. Congratulations Anabell." (Ágora, Brazil).
